Nex 7 my next camera
Nex 7 my next camera
Well all of you have done it and given me a new disease (the I want a new camera/lens disease) regarding the Nex 7. It seems we now live in a world where a $1,200 camera can compete with a $8,000 camera. For the money, the NEX 7 is a no brainer. I would much rather save the cash for more lenses than blow it on an M9.
Also, there are rumors Pentax is going to make a full frame mirrorless camera similar to the Sony Nex 7. If true, WOW!!! AMAZING!
My Noctilux will be on that all the time if this full frame rumor is true!

There are lots of cameras that can make prints as good as the M9, not just the nex7.
Not sure Pentax will build a full 24 by 36mm frame mirrorless soon though.

We always have lived in that world....even in the film days.
If you do not care for a mechanical rangefinder, the ergonomics of the M9, the classic controls of the M9, optical VF, etc. then you would be dumb to spend the cash on a M9. However, most of us don't buy the M9 because we think it is the pinnacle of resolution... we buy them because it's the only digital that really feels like a classic film camera.

Most of the times the resolution are better than I need. However; I print couple 20"x30" pictures to hang on the wall each trip. Is the resolution of 20"x30" print from 24MP Nex 7 + 35mm f1.4 ASPH FLE, as good as 18MP M9 + 50mm f1.4 ASPH? I know these are different cameras and lens but I more concern on the end result, the print.

They'll both make 20 by 30 prints you can stick on your wall. They'll be closer than you think. 20 by 30 means you'll need to crop the top/bottom of the Nex frame and will have 21Mp left. All else being equal, that's less than 10% more linear resolution than the M9, which will be barely, if at all, visible.
Neither will look as good from 3 inches as a small print from either camera, but both will be absolutely fine.

Why would you need to do this?

Ach, I'm talking nonsense - the Nex is 3:2. No cropping needed. I've been thinking about the little uns (Fuji X10 in fact) too much.
They'll still make basically similar big prints I'll bet - 15% more linear resolution, all else being equal.
Sorry for getting it wrong

Thanks sojournerphoto and jsrockit. So Nex 7 should be a good companion to M9 user, as a low light, tele photo, or a back up camera.

Backup? As long as you don't use wides. The 5n is better.

That is what I worry. I sold my NEX 5 (not NEX 5N) together with 15mm VC because of color shift. Hope there is easy fix for NEX 7.

this is not clear at all.
also the 5n is very picky about wides.

The GXR is a far better backup to the M9 than the 5n (i own 5n)
If the n7 happens to like the zm18 and the 28 cron (latter is quite likely) it will make quite a nice pesudo 9.
Only colorshifts have been documented as advantages of the 5n over the n7--and only a few lenses have been tested.
The key issue is edge performance. Again the 5n has poor edges on many wides--so you must be carefull which n7 performances are relevant.

Whatever. As a matter of fact after reading all I lost interest. Clearly these Sonys are quite nice cameras and capable of taking quite good images, but the only thing they have in common with the M9 is that they are digital cameras that can be adapted to take M lenses. So what else is new? There are plenty of cameras out there that fit that particular bill. I have filed them under "seven days wonders".

Oh yes, there are thousands of digital cameras that shoot M lenses well. A new one comes out every week. Sony is just the last to the party, I guess.
Why people feel the need to trash a milestone in camera evolution is utterly beyond me.
You see the same attitude directed at the M9 and Leica in general.
By "Plenty", besides the two leicas. we have:
RD-1
Ricoh GXR (m module just out)
Sony Nex
These are the only effective M shooters, since M43 is brutally handicaped by the 2x crop.

I'm not trashing cameras, I' m trashing the tendency in internet forums to run breathlessly after the Newest and the Bestest. We have seen endless threads praising the Panasonic G, Olympus Pen and now Sony NEX as the perfect Leica replacement for taking M lenses, the Fuji X10, X 100 as so milestone that they should make Leica consider a me-too model, until the next seven-day wonder comes along. The Internet celebrates consumerism and the tendency to regard anything new as a milestone is one expression of that tendency imo
The only thing that the NEX series shares with the M9 is the ability to take M lenses, albeit with a third-party adapter. It is not optimized for Leica lenses, it cannot recognize the coding, it is not full frame, it has no rangefinder viewfinder, It has totally different ergonomics, etc. It is just a different product coming from a different design philosophy aimed at different customer group.
It makes just as much sense, or probably more sense, to slot it into the Leica R discussions.

Nice to lump admirers of the n7 into the handy pidgin hole of "breathless consumers" and to assume all sorts of things about how they compare the n7 and m9.
Especially when you make all sorts of assumptions about it's performance yourself, based on....well I'm not sure what..since the camera is unable to hold your interest.
The buzz around the release of the digital leicas, this was breathless consumerism also?
