Nex-7 outresolves M9 w/ 50 ASPH

manual wides?

For you, I just pulled out my M6 and compared to nex- 5n + EVF and nokton 50/1.1 @ f/1.1 with close objects in my kitchen.

I have to asume the M6 is going to get accurate results, but I checked the nex to see if I missed.

I can tell no difference in speed and I hit the focus with only minimum peaking and no mag on the nex.

I suggest you try one before asuming anything.

Who ever needed to "focus accurately" with wides since the dawn of time? I could judge focus with a external viewfinder probably perfect all the time. Focusing is a 50mm+ focal length problem.

Not assuming anything. Just asking and repeating: Do you seriously pretend that you can focus manual *wides* with same speed and accuracy as an M with your Nex? Remember, a 50mm lens is a short telephoto on APS cameras.

No, in my experience it is not generally as accurate. This will somewhat depend on the scene. More or less static subjects are easy to focus on since you can use the magnification. The outcome will naturally depend on anyone's style, skill, and preference, but for me a rangefinder is generally much more useful, reliable and predictable.

I use the NEX-5N without an EVF. I think adding the EVF should make quick framing easier for my style of photography, however the focus indication should be the same regardless of which viewfinder you use on the NEX.
 
OK. I've been reading these posts and the discussion on whether the NEX 5, 5n, 7 etc. is a good backup for the M9. I have an M8u. In my several years of use, it has never failed,faltered or even stuttered. Why a backup anyway? I admit that I frequently take my Panasonic GF1 with me on trips but that is just for convenience when I don't want to
bother with the Leica and it's assortment of prime lenses. The GF1 fits in a largish pocket unless I use the zoom lens, but a backup for the Leica M8? Never. It doesn't fail.
I have to assume that the M9 is equally facile in all conditions since I don't own one.
The only people I can think of that really need a backup are professionals, and they probably own at least two M digitals anyway.

Why a Nex or Ricoh GX or whatever? Because they are another toy, and heaven knows I love toys, especially ones that take lenses as much as the next guy. I'm forever looking for an excuse to buy one. But as a backup for an M digital? Get serious.

OK. I said it. Go ahead and skewer me for it.

Well said and excellent points made. Who cares if this or that P/S out-respolves an M8 or 9. A big so what! In my years with Leica cameras, never once a failure, always dependable, solid and ever-ready. Is it the best camera, the one with the best images. Hell, I'm not going there. That has been beaten to death. My current Leica --an M9-- simply works. I would add flawlessly. I too, take a GF1 with me. Mostly because its a nice compact camera there for a quick grab shot now and then. But seriously a backup??? No way and the only back up for an M, in any iteration is another M.
 
With my 1.2 Nokton, it's seldom too dark. I expect that if I had a .9, it would be too dark even less seldom. No sentence structure lessons, please. Besides, if it is all that dark, I'd just stumble around anyway and probably hurt myself.
 
hm...I do not treat the GXR as a backup to my M, rather as a companion. In low light it has a 35/1.4 attached, on a hike it has a 200/4 or a Macro. That it takes the same lenses the M does is a handy coincidence 🙂
