the 16/2.8 prime is very thin, fits in a small p&s bag I have.

The 18-200 zoom is pretty short, but is still relatively large in dia. making it look a bit stubby, and when mounted on the tiny NEX, it looks like a huge lens, because the body is so small.

I don't get the NEX line.

They have these wonderfully small cameras with giant lenses that totally negate the idea of them being small.

If the lens is going to stick out that far, you might as well buy a smaller bodied DSLR.

I don't buy it. That's no pop up flash; just the same old accessory spot. There's money to made selling those accessories.

It's hard to say. In the renderings we've seen so far, that area has no fingernail indentation for lifting up an accessory port cover, so it may very well be a flash under there.

I see your point, but I would bet that the majority of NEX users here don't use the Sony AF lenses. With a small Leica lens on it, its very compact.

I would bet that, to the contrary, the vast majority of NEX users, if they've ever seen the word "Leica" at all, have seen it only on the front of a Panasonic P&S camera.

I think you are wrong there. Many users on this forum use the NEX with leica lenses.

In my experience the vast majority of leica owners don't use them at all. They sit in cabinets and gather dust, forgotten.

On top of that you underestimate the brand. While few realise the digital leicas exist, the name itself is recognised by nearly everyone.

They don't know what "rangefinder" means, but they know leica means high quality camera gear.

Then they'd (Olympus, Nikon, Canon) better get off their rears and build some small DSLRs with image quality to match the NEX cameras! At this point, the only way to get that IQ is to buy a much bigger DSLR, or the X100.

Man, why do they insist on these large lenses? Thank someone for adapters so one can use smaller lenses that take advantage of these bodies.

The lenses designed for these cameras have to be big. First, remember the sensor size; second, remember that they need to have AF motors built into them, too. Most people buying these cameras aren't getting them to use anyone's legacy lenses; they want dedicated systems and lenses designed for the cameras- and they aren't buying manual focus from anyone. Then there are the speed requirements of the market. Maybe they could make smaller lenses, but they'd have to be pretty slow- and they know slow lenses don't sell as well.

So you need to have an AF lens (with the AF motor in the lens) and it has to be at least f3.5 or f4- and you really need faster options or people will complain and say they missed the boat. Most of the lenses need to be zooms, since fixed focal length lenses aren't popular with most people. Taking all this into consideration, how could the lenses really be much smaller?

I understand drewbarb, but why bother with a small body if you need to have a huge lens to go with it. It seems to defeat the purpose of these cameras to me. A DSLR seems like a better fit in the huge lens category just due to simple ergonomics / balance. But the other thing is that this body may not be as small as we think...

I don't find them to be particularly large, and certainly not 'huge.' They are larger than the equivalent micro 4/3 lenses but those lenses can be smaller since the m4/3 sensor is smaller.

Here is a comparison I just shot of the NEX 18-55mm kit vs the Panasonic 14-45mm kit.

In terms of zooms, you're right. But the primes are gigantic...I don't understand everything about lenses, but I'm sure I've seen wide and standard primes designed for full frame DSLRs that are tiny by comparison.

Well who has one of these fast primes in their possession so a true comparison can be made with equivalent speed DSLR lenses? 🙂
