I'll have one once the nex-7 comes out, if turns up as rumored...
Anyway I thought one of the ideas behind the NEX series was to make the body as small as possible, consequently making the lenses look bigger than they actually are, right?

I don't find them to be particularly large, and certainly not 'huge.' They are larger than the equivalent micro 4/3 lenses but those lenses can be smaller since the m4/3 sensor is smaller.
Here is a comparison I just shot of the NEX 18-55mm kit vs the Panasonic 14-45mm kit.

Well, to me zooms are huge no matter what the format. I'm used to rangefinder lenses... and small rangefinder lenses. My largest lens is the 35mm Biogon f/2 ZM.
I'm not asking for much, just some small primes... like the size of its 16mm lens.

Good one.
If you want a small RF lens on your NEX, then use a small RF lens.
If you want an AF lens, there will need to be room for the AF motor and electronics, auto aperture mechanism and electronics, and possibly image stabilization circuitry, all of which take up no space in a ZM 35/2 Biogon.

Understood... and agreed. However, I don't mind AF and the 16mm is a fine size. I was just hoping for more lenses of similar size. I'm not even sure the NEX-7 is something I'd like yet, so I'm getting ahead of myself.
The 16 is only f/2.8, so smaller glass, and has no IS. And it only has to cover the APS sensor unlike the ZM. If you want a faster lens than that, you'll get a bigger one...

Unfortunately it's the APS-C sensor size combined with the short lens mount to sensor difference that's making these lenses large, not the electronics and AF mechanisms. The lens mount to sensor distance in the NEX is very short, and with the sensor being so large, it's difficult to get the light from the lens to strike the edges of the sensor head on - not without making the lenses very large at least. This is likely why the 16mm pancake is optically average.
This is where m4/3 has a big advantage - because of the 4:3 aspect ratio of the sensor, as well as it's (slightly) smaller size, the lenses can be much smaller whilst still maintaining some degree of telecentricity. Thus lenses like the recent Zuiko 12mm f2 can be small (and AF) while still being sharper in the corners than other similar lenses (say - the 24mm sumilux on an m9 - as steve huff recently showed on his site).

That is also a factor, good point. Same reason why a 28/2.8 RF lens is smaller than a 28/2.8 manual focus SLR lens...

Samsung has shown that small pancakes are still possible with an aps-c mirrorless, and the 30/2 is a good performer. Granted, Sony's version of these lenses would need to be 7mm longer, because of the registration distance between the two sensors.
Or, when the 24mp NEX-7 comes out, one could just crop to m4/3 proportions, if he/she wanted to.

It is just an announcement. Most of the new products will not be available until October or even November. I am pretty psyched about the 7.Aug 24th cant come soon enough. I need a back up for my RD1s for my upcoming Cuba trip.

I am so excited about this camera. For one because the idea of a very small compact camera with a really nice viewfinder and a super high resolution sounds awesome. But the other reason is because way back in the day I had a Sony f717 and I absolutely loved it, this thing is like future 717 minus the swivel body (a loss unfortunately).
Recently I have been giving thought to upgrading my commercial shooting kit with a 5dk2 and such, unfortunately this camera does not have the appeal of a large camera because clients would not understand it, its all penis comparing. This thing though is high on my list of future purchases however since m4/3 has left me very unimpressed.

This is a confirmed rumor. "The NEX-7 will be available in Europe and US around the 7th-10th of November. Via Photorumors"

Don't know what people are drooling over. It's not like your pictures are going to get better with this camera then it was with any camera from 70 years back? It's just the same ol' rolling wheel. When are you all meant to be happy?

We're anticipating the very first, comparatively affordable non-leica/epson body that has a modern APS-C sensor, incorporates a high-res electronic viewfinder with an innovative manual focus scheme, can physically mount our legacy glass and ignore focus shifting lenses/rangefinder misalignment issues, takes probably very good high-iso pics, has a standard hotshoe for use with radio triggers, has a growing line of autofocus lenses, does HD video, etc.
Samsung's offering from last year came very close to this feature set but it could not mount our ltm or m-mount lenses. It was very disappointing.
This product seems to have it all. I can successfully downsize and concentrate on lenses only. That's why I'm drooling.
