Zivco: It seems that the black rim lenses are late models, so maybe the material has been changed to make the lenses lighter than they used to be in the past.

the coatings on the lenses is different, hold the lens with a light bulb above it, look at lens, you should be able to see the different colors of coatings, the early lenses should have single or dbl. coated lenses, later lenses have more. Jim

the coatings were added for color film, i have a Nikon 5cm 3.5 501xxx series that is uncoated, probably from 1940-45, after the war the same lens is coated, about when color films were readily available to the public, uncoated lenses were made for b/w film
