Nikon D600 announced ... Not Sub-$2000 ...

About the same price as the newly announced Sony A99. They share a similar, if not the same, sensor.

About $700 cheaper, but still. I can't see the appeal of this, let's be honest, half-assed full frame camera. It is designed SPECIFICALLY to NOT undercut the D800 ... And every little thing was picked at to reduce price apparently. Still, it presents a clear upgrade path for D90/D7000/D300/D300S users ... if they so choose to take on the Full Frame promise.

Why is this a 'half arsed full frame camera' ... but not so the RX1 which lacks a viewfinder?

Please explain! :D

RX1 is a point and shoot. It is obvious Sony does not intend for the RX1 to sell to a large audience. It is a niche camera, more so because of the fixed lens with its fixed focal length.

D600 is a Nikon DSLR. It is expected to be used everywhere. I only say half-assed with respect to Nikon products, where each is specifically reduced in certain features, materials, alloys, plastics, etc. to cut costs and not undercut the higher end model. And to quote TheVerge, "it's a little too pricey to truly be bringing full-frame photography within reach of the masses".

Nice its official now, despite current price. Full frame in smaller package. Bet Canon has something similar in their roadmaps too. My AI lenses that have been sitting in storage box for years will again start seeing something :) Hope focus screens for manual lenses soon appear too.

I was mildly interested at the rumored $1500 price (I have Nikon lenses and a D5100 and would like to stay Nikon), but at $2100 ? . . . no . . . I'm out.

If Nikon doesn't announce a 20mm or 24mm/f2.0 or 2.8 DX prime lens at Photokina, I am selling off and going over to Fuji X100 (or XE1 ?).

Digital Camera Warehouse in Brisbane have just listed the D600 for $2470.00 ... that's more than I paid for my D700 new a couple of years ago!

I'm betting that after a few months, once the hype dies down and demand from the early-adopters eases off a tad we'll see the price of a D600 body drop down to the $15-1800 range.
I had the cash a couple months ago and decided to go with a D2X (my brother swears by his) to supplement my F5... Fx senor or not, $2000 for the D7k body is silly. If I were going to buy now, I'd save the extra $1000 and get the far superior D800.

The D7000 is half the price. Only advantage of D600 is FX. Is it worth it?

For some FX (36x24mm) is the Holy Grail of photography for others its just another format. Larger then Micro 4/3rds and DX but smaller then 56 x 41.5mm(digital MF) 6x6/7/8 MF 8x10 large format. Each of which have their own particular pluses and minus.
