Not even a little bit.
A brand new Nikon F6 at Grays of Westminster is 1899GBP. A mint condition (not like-new condition) Nikon F6 sold by Peter Walnes is 875GBP. In US dollars, the difference is about 1300. So, again, the quoted 1700 is an exaggeration.

Mint condition F6's are found on ebay for $900.
A new one at B & H is $2546.
That's $1646 more expensive. So yeah, I guess I did exaggerate by $54.

I bought my Canon 1V off ebay many years ago. I dont recall the price difference from a new one at the time but it was easily $1000 or more cheaper. It's been flawless all these years.

This always confuses me.
The guy says he wants new.
Fine.
He even went so far as to give reasons.
Good reasons.
Again, fine.
Yet many posters are doing their best to convince him to buy a used camera.
???Why???
...and then we whine that no one is building new cameras and that the film revival cannot continue unless there are new cameras available.
...???...
Exactly!!
You've nailed it.

Here's a vid I learned about the new and used camera shopping from Japan https://youtu.be/iqyFuf9_sd8

Hi Ted,
I admit that the situation may be different in the US. In Europe, the difference is less. Even if I find a mint F6 at a Japanese seller, I still have to pay VAT and taxes, which means an extra 25% to the sale price.

My two cents...if and when living in Romania, I'd buy a brand-new one.

I didn't know VAT was added to used gear.

Used or not, when you buy something from outside the Union, you have to pay VAT and taxes. Which means that, if I buy a mint F6 from Japan, I might actually pay more than for a brand new one from a seller in Europe.

Unlikely. Mint prices in Japan are $900-$1000. There's no reason to pay more than that if you are sourcing out of Japan. Even with VAT that's a huge savings over a new one.

Ted, you want to demonstrate that buying a new F6 makes no sense. I understand your point and I'm not forcing mine. Living where I live and taking all the facts into consideration, my conclusion is that it makes more sense to buy new. You disagree and I noted your point. Given your insistence, however, I have to remind you that in this thread I was asking my fellow RFFers where can I buy a new F6, not whether I should buy a new one or a second-hand one.

Dear Alex,
I completely agree with you!
I've bought my F6, MB-40 and MV-1 also brand new and I have never regretted that decision! For me that is a kind of "once in a lifetime" purchase. Products I'll use for decades.
And, by the way, arguing with "Ted Striker" is just a waste of time. His posts are always driven only by his own points of view ignoring the wishes and needs and completely different circumstances of other photographers.

Skiff,
Thank you very much for your encouragement. For me, it's also that kind of "once in a lifetime" purchase. Let's hope that the local store will be able to bring one F6 at a reasonable price. Can't wait for that phone call...
Thanks,
Alex

You're welcome.
If they cannot get one for you, just use a distributor in another EU country. Trade across borders is one of the numerous big advantages of the EU and our common Europe. E.g. a friend of mine just recently bought a new one in Germany and all was fine.

Hopefully it works out with your local suppliers and what a great thing to be buying.

Because they are trolls who are ALWAYS CORRECT! and will continue insisting until all others are silent, despite having made all of their points repeatedly. It's a disturbing trend on RFF. Over the years RFF has generally been civil and friendly, but that may be changing.

The best camera is one that still works!

RFF has always had this element and in my opinion it has been much worse historically. The advent of social media has taken a lot of them away where they can express their curmudgeonly opinions with few repercussions.

Keith,
I hope that you are correct. I've been active for less than a year this time, having gone silent for 3 years or so.

Reasonably well behaved but certainly not the buzz that it used to have in my opinion.

Hi Alex, just a further addition:
I can highly recommend using the MB-40 vertical grip with the F6.
Because you get
- improved ergonomics
- perfect handling for shots in vertical orientation (e.g. portraits)
- the possibility to use both the original Nikon rechargeable battery and AA cells (normal and rechargeable); that is a huge advantage! I use Panasonic eneloop rechargeable AA cells in my F6, and it works perfectly: I get 35 - 50 rolls per charge
- 8 fps.
