Nikon FE2 Fever...what?

I bought an FM2n not too long ago to go along with my F3. I thought at first it was too small, and the winding lever was always jabbing me in the eye no matter which eye I looked through the viewfinder with.

Then suddenly, it started to grow on me. I quite enjoy that camera now, I'm pretty certain it will last forever.

One more, who loves his FE...
It is in repair now, first time after more than 30 years of heavy use.
And the only serious fault is the not always working frame counter.
I would call it a reliable camera...

I'm very pleased with my FM2n. I haven't always liked them though. They were the standard issue company cameras when I worked as a cruise ship photographer. At first I never got on with them in that environment though. Most of the lenses were zooms and with a Sunpak hammerhead bolted on the FM2 just did not balance well. It wasn't until I removed the flash and put on a 50mm that I really began to appreciate what great compact camera the FM2 really was. After that I was kind of hooked on the FM2 I would have bought one myself but I was an Cannon EOS shooter at the time and did not want to maintain two separate systems. When my father was looking for a small spare body to go with his N90s/F90x I recommended the FM2n. He never really got on with the body and decided to give it to me one christmas along with a 50mm f1.8. AF. Of course after that I added a 75-150 zoom, 105mm f2.5 P, 35mm f2.5e, 50mm f2 H, 24mm f2.8 and a 35-70 f2.5. I will likely pick up a 35mm F2 O next time one comes up locally.

Thanks, Rob...

Sounds expensive so that will be down the road...what is the best focusing screen for the F2?

I plan on getting the K3 screen for the FE2.

No such thing as "best screen" because everyone has personal favorites, and some screens were required for specialized photography. I have a motorized F body that spent its life on a microscope in a University of Toronto Botany laboratory. It has a type M screen in it.
The K type screen is the standard screen that the cameras are factory-fitted with. I never liked them as they tend to force you to look at the center of the field to check focus, which often causes you to neglect looking at the perimeter of the field so compositions suffer. Additionally, the split circle in the center often partially blacks out when used with slow lenses, so I swapped them out years ago.
I prefer blank screens with the overlaid grids, and so all my SLRs have either blank screens (type B) or the blank screen with the overlaid grids (type E) in them.
And this includes my FM which was custom fit with an FM-2/FE-2 grid (type E) screen.
Yes, sharp focus is far more subjective with the B or E than with the K, but unless you have poor eyesight, practice will teach you to do it well.

Ha! Just for grins, whilst waiting for yet another trip for blood work, I tried the Leica R4 black leather half-case on the FE2....It fit! With a minor bulge where the flash sync is it looks and feels terrific!!

Maybe I should look for a case for the FE2...but which one is good and affordable? Luigi is out of my price range.

The EL/FE series have the most intuitive and nonintrusive aperture priority AE implementation I have encountered. I know there is a lot of FM love out there, but the lack of distracting diodes in the FE and the convenience of the automation makes this my favorite SLR ever.

Dave--try KEH for a good Nikon case for the FE2--not as sexy as Luigi, but definitely well-made and vastly cheaper...
Good to see you today at Wing's--nice F2!
Paul

Today was "FE2 day" so I got a photo of the black body with the X1.
