This is a good question .... what is the cost?
What is the current market value for a clean first version 35/1.2?
What is the expected cost of a new second version 35/1.2?
Alternatives are: CV 35/1.4 , Summilux, Zeiss

Well this is now the big question, other than it's performance and drawing style compared to the original.
CV is one of the only companies to put prices up to scare people into a fear of losing a product, only to reintroduce it's successor a month or two later. I really don't agree with this and I am sure there are plenty of buyers who aren't' happy about this. It also now sets a new standard of pricing where the new model could be priced between $1300-$2000 without people asking why the price went up as high as 100%.
It's kind of clever marketing, but it's not exactly brand trust/confidence building is it?
Me? I already placed an order with Stephen and look forward to it's arrival and testing compared to my current mark I version.

I am content with my vintage Leica gear. I am not looking to CV gear. If the 35/1.2 CV costs about $600, then I would be interested. Built quality and name recognition and overall quality all are important factors. CV is still a baby.

did Cosina bump the prices up, or was that because of the exchange rate changes?

As best as I can tell - its not Cosina or exchange rates - that lens was no longer made. Hey free market, right.

It was not CV who raised their prices. Stephen mentioned that they were sold out at the factory, which left him with only the stock on hand to sell. Stephen raised the prices. After than everyone else nearly world wide, I know HK, Korea, Thailand and NA all look to Stephen's prices to set their own.Well this is now the big question, other than it's performance and drawing style compared to the original.

I suspect it was the exchange rate. It's killing exports from Japan. That said, if the rates change, I somehow doubt the prices will drop.

How can it be exchage rate if NONE of the other lenses changed in price? Shouldn't change in rate apply to all products and NOT a specific item?

I got a great deal on a 35 Summicron V1 and a good deal on a 35mm Summilux V2, and I went with both. Total cost for both: $1500.

Either way, if a retailer raise the prices, CV is still responsible if it does not fit within their pricing strategy. They 'can' control what authorized sellers sell at, and they let it happen, meaning that they endorsed the price increase. Either way, it wasn't so tasteful but it did give them a step - enabling them to raise the price of the mark II another step from there. Only time will tell, but I am excited to see how this new lens does. I don't really care if it's better or worse cause I'm already more than happy with the Mark I.

Please make up your mind too. Everybody complains when lenses dont focus down to more tan 0.9 meters - and here is a 35 that will go down to 0.5 meter! On a R4M/A it will focus down to 0.5 meter - and the smaller size will intrude less in the finder too.
It's not really a question of making up our minds. I think many people would applaud a rangefinder system that goes down to 0.5m, me included. The reality, though, is that those of us using Leicas will be wrongfooted when the focus goes closer than 0.7m.
Now if it's possible to get a Leica M7 and M8 adjusted to use the lens at 0.5m, I'll be first in the queue. In fact that would be a dream come true for me personally. If not, I would be looking for the old version. Admittedly, I will also be thinking "hmm would an R4a be worth it just to get that close focus".

I guarantee this lens will not be exactly the same as the first version... so if you want the first version, you still have to deal with the prices as they are today.
interesting.....can you elaborate please...I initially thought something similar because I thought that once you changed the dimensions of the lens and the size of the glass then things would be different.....
but then I remembered what Leica did with the 50mm summilux ASPH.....they made that special edition one for the mp3....it was a 50mm summilux ASPH (43mm filter, V1 style) and I have never heard anyone complain that it performs different than the current 50mm summilux ASPH.......
I imagine that the 50mm summicron rigid and the DR have the same glass inside.......

I suppose it doesn't come with a generic lenshood like the old version did?
(hint hint, let your friends in japan buy cheap vented 52mm screw-in lenshoods for you like I did.

Spotted the 35/1.2 V2 today at CP+ after I checked out the new X100.

I definitely stand by the fact that I think the silver ring looks quite charming.
But yes as other people have hinted at, with all these design changes the lens will no doubt render somewhat differently. It could be worse than the original... or better.

Thanks for the info Tom. Will there be a chrome version? Please say "YES!"

The pricing on a few cv lenses is pretty ridiculous now. The 35/1.2 and the 50/1.5 have dramatically increased in price. Now, they may still be worth the cost, but I would be reluctant to purchase one given what the price was only two years ago. With the prices as they stand now you can easily buy a used leica lens or a hex in excellent condition for the same amount of money. Not saying that those brands are necessarily any better, just saying that certain cv lenses are no longer the bigtime value for money deals that they once were.

Yes, I got very lucky. The seller is a very nice person indeed. When I have such lenses at such a cost, I find it too expensive to pay that much for any of the CV lenses.
