Looks like I have a chance to pick up a Noct f1 early version.
If any of you could give some input as to prices and make a comparison to the latest E60 version it would be most appreciated.
Personally I prefer the latest slide out hood but, I've read comments that it is not so functional. Is this actually true?
There seems to be no difference in the optical formula or is there?
This is not a lens I have long coveted or researched. Any input would be great.

Cheers!

i have the E58 version, and leave the hood on permanently. a no-name 'pinch' lens cap makes it easier to remove the cap. in the early days, i found the focusing to be a bit stiff (normal), so i added a 'steer' external ring from leicagoodies for better grip. it's now on permanently too.

i had the lens coded and adjusted at the factory for use with my m8. it works perfectly with an m9.

current pricing? almost twice what i paid two years ago. would i sell it? not likely.

good luck with yours

I have the second F1.0 version made in Canada by ELCAN immediately prior to the one with the built-in lens hood. It takes the E60 filter and uses a separate plastic clip-on lens hood. My lens is the same in all respects as the newest F1.0, and is just slightly different optically than the F 0.95 lens costing $10, 995.00. I've had mine for 8-10 years now and LOVE it! I paid around $1,900.00 for mine back then!

This lens isn't tack sharp at the corners, but it never was intended to be. It does vignette until about F2.0, but in available darkness the natural vignette looks just fine!

Outside with buildings at night illuminated by street lights is where this optic shines! Point light sources don't flare at all!

Depth of field is extremely shallow and it takes a brief while to conceive this prior to looking at negs. As a creative tool, it really shines. Once you wrap your head around how & when to use it for it's great effects, you'll either love it or hate it! I love mine.

Good luck with yours!

I also have the E58 version which I waited for a long time and eventually found 3 or 4 years ago. I think they sell for between $5-6K now. It appeared to be unused and I had DAG service it and it has been great. As I understand it all the f1 lenses share the same optics but coatings may have changed over the years. Having said that my copy absolutely doesn't flare. Wonderful lens.

A nice lens if calibrated to match your camera. My copy of the Noctilux and my M4-P were calibrated by Leica to match, if you want 100% then it would be advisable. Also make sure that the lens elements are set firm in place, after some air-plane rides with the lens stored inside a bag in the overhead compartment, I had elements in the front-group coming loose ...

Mine had the sliding hood and I loved the rig. The hood is short. I believe in using hoods whether the lens is prone to flare or not. Unfortunately I sold my copy to help fund a big project. I would not hesitate to buy similar copy.
