Nokton 50mm f/1.1 B+W 58mm Filter Problem!!

You might want to try this....

1. Take out the hood from the lens.

2. Screw the filter to the end of the hood (the end where it screws on to the lens)

3. It should tighten properly. (works on my hoya filter)

4. Then screw in the hood + filter onto the lens.

Works for me. Sounds strange, but somehow it works...

Yes I'm sure. Even the new E43 Summilux ASPH that was sold with the MP3 has a 0.5mm thread pitch. Don't get me wrong, I've mounted a B+W UV filter on a pre-ASPH v.2 and it fitted perfectly, someone told me that B+W still issues filters in certain sizes with the "old" pitch. What those sizes are I don't know. But I've had weird problems with fit and B+W filters. A nuisance because I really like them...

Before I bought my Summilux ASPH 50mm LHSA from Tony Rose, I enquired about the filter thread pitch. He told me that it's standard 43mm 0.75mm pitch and I'm sure that it is. I don't use filters with it much. I'll go and check to make sure. If it is, that would be at variance with Peter's comment.

OOPS! I was wrong. It's definitely a finer pitch than the standard. I guess my only 43mm filter is 0.5mm pitch. I wonder if all 43mm filters are 0.5mm pitch?

Dang it I was sort of hoping you were right! 🙂 I'm fed up with the E43 0.5mm thread pitch business. BTW the Leica E43 UVa 13206 filter also fits the LHSA lens.

While you were busy doing your research I was off doing my own. I first hauled the LHSA box out to see if the thread pitch is specified as 0.5mm in the "manual" but disappointingly it is the manual for the regular lens with a little insert for the LHSA lens that doesn't mention the filter thread (of course). So next I lined up the LHSA lens next to an E46 pre-ASPH lens (which I believe has a 0.75 thread pitch) and the LHSA lens does have a tighter thread than the E46 pre-ASPH. Then I did a quick Google and came up with this PN thread, see the post by Bill Blackwell, Nov 15, 2006; 02:39 a.m. where Bill talks about the LHSA lens being "designed on the dies of the 1st and 2nd version Summilux of the 1960s". There are other references too. Pity Leica isn't more explicit about this. I don't know if your filter is a 0.5mm but I can tell you from experience that I've fitted 0.75mm thread pitch 43mm filters on a v.2 of the pre-ASPH Summilux. Go figure... Tolerances?

Again I appreciate all the suggestions and responses. I think some may have glossed over my original post at the very top of this thread..but I mention some things again (and a few new ones).

The B+W filter is not a knowck off. It most definitely is a genuine B+W and brand new from recently received stock. I even tried a 2nd new one and the results are the same.

I tried attaching both B+W filters to hood in every imaginable way and no luck. I've already encontered three others with the 50mm f1.1 and B+W UVIR filter and same issue. I also found one (out of 7 Hoya filters I have that had the same problem with the hood. Yet the other six Hoya filters and all otehr step rings etc. will work perfectly with either the hood or B+W UVIR filters. Other B+W filters from various years may fit hood perfectly...I'm just having this issue so far with the current B+W UVIR. Manufactirers do change the way they manufacture filters as time goes on. Anyhow, not a deal breaker and the filter can still be attached to the unique threads "inside" the hood (although VC mentions they don't recommend this when shooting on a film camera. Thanks!

Just got my 1.1 today and threw a Hakuba filter on and whaddaya know, the hood screwed in fine. Was waiting for the spin but nada. Not my first choice in filters but it'll do for now.
