I realized that I would like to have a small backup meter in my bag that is not dependent on a battery. I shoot slide film outdoors. Any suggestions or directions to other threads would be greatly appreciated.

Another vote for Weston Master. Personally I have found that the older they are, at least after WW2, the more reliable they are: the black 1950s models are incredible, though you have to do an ISO/Weston conversion.

Or consider one of the Gossen meters that runs on sensible batteries: AA, 9v block. AA is ideal as you can almost always steal a battery from something else, even if you can't buy one in a nearby shop.

Cheers,

R.

You could also try one of these, works pretty good, looks great...

Is it difficult (read expensive) to have a leica mc meter rebuilt? I think it's a good alternative but most of the ones I see on the net are advertised as being "dead".

I don't know if it feasible to rebuild them.

Mine works as you can see in the picture, but I just got an MR-4 to replace it. MY MC seems useless in low light, but pretty good in daylight. The MR-4 is good but takes batteries...
