Whatever the merits of the 8.2, it was born into an economic disaster that will likely keep most of them on dealer's shelves and not in the hands of photographers. Not a great time to introduce a high-end rangefinder.

But it will be around long enough to outlast the economic disaster, if Leica survives it, that is.

The situation will be worse for the S2 I'm afraid.

Bit off topic here, but an interesting question whether Leica can survive a worldwide recession.

If I needed a second body I would opt for used M8 before buying a new 8.2.
Of course, these days, I am cheap
Oohhh, another option: what about buying a used 8.2? It won't be long before they are available from someone who bought for all the wrong reasons

People who can shell out for a new Leica are not usually worrying about paying off the mortgage. Just think of the statement you could make by having one during a recession. It will be interesting to see how sales go.

..and in reply to the original question...er..no. I don't think so.

Exactly. I don't imagine most of the people buying Leica's are people who worry about losing their jobs. It's a luxury good. That some people scrimp and save to get one doesn't imply the majority of their user base does.

They have before, and they have before with other very expensive products besides the Ms, none of which probably ever made much money for them.
I still do not see the logic behind introducing the S2 when FF 35mm DSLRs are already approaching that level of quality without having to buy a whole new set of lenses.
Of course I am a dumb, broke, photographer, what do I know

In case you missed the news, luxury products are in a world of hurt these days.

When you own a small business you must buy a certain amount of equipment every year or you end up giving the money to Uncle (who will just give it to some #@*#@ wall street banker)... so you might as well buy another Leica... or computer... or printer.

It will be for some, not for other's. A better question is whether it is better for you. Why worry if someone else thinks it is worth the extra bit?

Indeed. And if so, most of the threads here would never be opened. Consider this as an open question: "Is it worth the difference to one..."

is a new xxx worth twice the price of a used previous xxx
insert car, bike, computer, TV, boat, digital camera, video recorder, etc ....
IMHO - for some yes, for some no, and it is often not related to how much you have to spend - some of my wealthiest friends are the stingiest !

Is a used 35mm Skopar worth half the price of a new 35mm SKopar PII ?
Same question, different budgets. Tough to answer as in the end it is really about the relative value each of us put on money.
But let's imagine we talk about the median salary of a Western economy, the answer is probably "no". I am not sure though that M8 owners are in the median salary ...
