Still on for this Sunday?
I need to come to NYC that day, so look forward to attending. Will be collecting my MF kit back from my kid, I barely had a chance to use it before she confiscated it for a project!

Randy,
Great.

Open to the public?
John,
Welcome to my world. LOL. Be aware that it is both fun and crazy.
Last night I get told "Maggie" needs some photographers to cover the event. I already recruited Brian, and I was thinking of you, Pro-Mone and Christian because we have all shot together before.
Fordham will be doing the video, but what we need is digital still shooters to primarily cover the event. The next important thing is to make the shot about the clothes so texture and lighting are very important. Of next importance is having the models look good.
The audience will be loaded with artistic and creative people, and some are of big stature. Know that this event is happening one week before New York Fashion Week.
Here is the smut. Expect about 250 people. The fashion show will not feature a runway, but will be a series of large tables so the models will do their walk weaving through the tables. Food is supplied/donated by Whole Foods. Our designer friend Arlinda (Sofistafunk.com) will be styling "Maggie" with her clothes and will also be modeling her own clothes as the on-core. Arlinda takes clothing that she buys in thrift shops and recreates from that raw material high fashion clothing. She makes skants which are part pants part skirt. There is an over the top kinda crazy style in her clothes that is a bit costume.
BTW when shooting models the "head to toe" that is not too tight, but also not too loose is the favored shot of the Art Director (Maggie), but detailed close up shots, especially that show details of the clothing, where the models look good, the lighting is perfect, and somehow you capture a moment of interaction or drama that happens to have a perfect background are also welcomed. Basically street shooting indoors.
Please let me know if you are interested because the "Accidental Icon" needs to know by Friday.
BTW all we need is the files. Should be fun and of course exciting, especially being an insider.

I think I would like to try my hand at this Cal. Of course, I'd need to know a little more of what to expect and what would be expected from me. However, it sounds fun. Would you be expecting flash photography?

John,
Whatever is the best tool for the job. Flash I think would be an asset.
First off all we need are files. Covering this event involves a full blown fashion show and a paneled discussion that will cover women empowerment, and sustainable fashion.
Primary purpose is just covering and documenting the event. The next important shooting is really photographing the clothes and making them look great (the clothing is the main subject), and lastly try to make the models look good so they have something to put in their "Book."
An important shot is the Head-To-Toe. Try not to cut off any model's ankles because Maggie won't like the shot. If you can get closer shots that reveal details of the clothing it would be a bonus. Catching a moment of drama, interaction, or tension is all the stuff we know from street shooting.
I'll likely do some "kill zone" and some roving. You do whatever you like that works for you. I picked you because I trust your judgement. Anyways you will also see how crazy it gets behind the scenes, and fashion people are both crazy and fun.
Arlinda is the finale and "Maggie" instructed her to go over the top. Arlinda is a great designer who uses other people's clothing as raw material. Also "Maggie will be styled by Arlinda and will be also modeling Arlinda's clothes.
The hard part is this is an indoor shoot so either high ISO or flash is required. I will likely scout out the Pope Auditorium at Lincoln Center so we are both less anxious.
I suspect Brian will be shooting a M240. I'll be lending him my 50 Lux since I'll be shooting the D3X. I think I'll use the excuse of it being indoors to shoot the 28/1.4 D-AF. Maggie has wide angle phobia, so if I get forced into shooting the Noct-Nikkor you are welcome to borrow the 28.
Thank you so much.

FASHION SHOW PANIC UPDATE: After rounding up me, Brian, Jon and Bob on quick notice it seems that Fordham is also covering the event. LOL.
Like I said in the world of fash-in things are crazy and always at the last moment. This means there is less stress and responsibility, and for a lazy slacker like me it is wonderful.
We can just enjoy the event and try to get some good shots without any pressure.

Well, I'd use the Df, but I'm just not sure what the lighting will be like.

As long they are comfortable with me photographing, I'm sure I can get something good.

I'd have to buy a flash, but the Df is a pretty great low light camera with the 58mm 1.4.

With that lens and the clean ISO's of the camera it should be pretty sweet,
I'm trying to find a flash I think Metz might work.

John,
I think you will be fine with the 58/1.4. The High ISO performance of your DF kills my D3X in this regard. This is an unpaid gig, but know that if any photography of yours is used in any way you will get the photo credit.
I plan on scoping out the space and getting more info. The models and people at these type of events are very relaxed about being shot. You might also have opportunities to pose the models. This is their best interest because they are looking for great shots to add to their "Book."
I am deeply impressed by how big Maggie's blog has gotten. Last night nearly 24K followers with a good notoriety overseas.
I imagine there will be a time to socialize with the crowd when the Whole Foods donation is distributed. Maybe inbetween events?
Anyways if this all seems a bit out of control you have good instinct: it is.

Bob,
I'm tempted with borrowing a used dedicated flash from Adorama or B&H. If I don't like it I can always return it. LOL. I'll be checking their inventory shortly. LOL.
February 7th is still a little far away. In the meantime do your research on dedicated flashes for the D3. I think the flash unit that is the most powerful is the SB-900. The SB-800 is an old version. The newer SB-900 is updated so that it does not overheat when repeatedly abused by fashion photographers.
BTW don't tell anyone, but it is common practice to buy and return clothes and shoes that are to be used on photo shoots in the fashion industry. Price tags are not removed, and soles of shoes are protected with gaffer's tape to protect from wear and tare. Please don't tell anyone. LOL.

Pro-Mone,
Glad you are joining the party. If I could shoot film I would exploit my Pentax 67II and the most powerful dedicated flash built for that camera that I own. In fact I might bring it anyways because I still have Fuji Velvia 50 in 220 (only one roll) even though it is a beast.
BTW I saw on another thread that you are looking for a NYC lab. I go to Duggal and I still get a student discount because once you are in the system listed as a student you remain on that list forever.
BTW the clothes on Arlinda's site are tame and do not represent the full blown Arlinda. I met Arlinda last year at Fashion Week in Lincoln Center. I took a few shots before she took notice that I was blasting away. I chimped my Monochrom (pre D3X) and showed her some shots. We talked for a while. When she gave me her card I suddenly remembered that we met once before through our mutual friend Brigot who also is part of this show.
The Brooklyn Incubator is also a very advanced, I don't know a word to describe it, but it supplies infrastructure to start-ups that is a bit like venture capitalism, but instead of money they provide space, machinery and other expensive logistic support. Very-very high concept.

NY Dan, please bring a copy for me to buy, and please inscribe it for me.
I've got a can/stubbie of each of the most mainstream beers of the three eastern Australian states - XXXX from Queensland, Tooheys New from New South Wales and Victoria Bitter from Victoria to contribute to the prize pool.

Dan,
Only this week have I finally discovered that I like the look of Canson Baryta Photographique and Canson Plantine Fibre Rag that are both warmer, have a smoother finish, and make glossier prints.
The Jon Cone Type 5 I stuck with to cut my teeth with looks mat in comparasion with its satin finish. The Type 5 has the blackest black though... and I think it will be used as my mat paper. Understand the work I am bringing are just work prints and I really need the 7800 to print for exhibition, and I'm not there yet. Only very recently am I experimenting with papers. I think you will be surprised how much the work looks like medium format and how the Epson and Canson papers look like wet prints. 13x22 are small image size.
The Canson papers have this glow that is deeply planted in the midrange and warmth is more deeply extended into the shadows. In comparision the Epson Exhibition Fiber has the glow more in the highlights.
Anyways I'll be bringing a box of 13x19 images printed on 17x22 paper and some postcards to show how things scale up and down. The 8 1/2x11 Canson verses Jon Cone is one interesting comparision, and the 22x17 Epson verses Jone cone is another.
I will also bring some Digital Silver imaging proofs that will display the differences between my Piezography splitone and a Digital silver wet print on fiber.
For printers this is a great opportunity to see examples close up. I'll be bringing a D-5000 lamp so we will avoid the "cave lighting" at Puck Fair.

"Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion.
Pinprick holes in a colourless sky,
Let inspired figures of light pass by.
The mighty light of ten thousand suns,
Challenges infinity and is soon gone.
Night time, to some a brief interlude,
To others the fear of solitude.
Brave Helios wake up your steeds,
Bring the warmth the countryside needs."
By Graeme Edge as spoken by keyboardist Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues.
***************************************
Drinking beer in a rundown bar,
Photographers converge from near and far.
Cameras are shown off--and displayed,
As buildings go up and profits are made.
Meanwhile artists get displaced--and creativity fades.
Let creative figures of life pass by
As the city becomes suburbia--we wonder why?
As buildings go up and profits are made,
Artists get displaced and creativity fades.
The inspiration of life gets divided again and again,
unnoticed, anonomous and unrecognized--when does an artist win?
Once a year the cycle begins,
Hopefully this year some artist will win.
Dedicated to my mind numbing day-job, although I thought of this on my bus ride into work this morning.

P.S. That album, while including some great songs, is also an example of the worst possible outcome of too many music lessons.

Randy,
Back in the day that vinyl album got worn out and resonated for me. LOL.
I think the new lyrics bring something profound that weaves with the old poem and has a context and foundation to springboard from that has a profound meaning today.
Also know that as I age it seems the attitude and anger that I had in the seventies returns, basically because the times for me are the same: I don't have a lot to loose so its time to get crazy. I don't have that many more decades left, and now that I'm old a decade is not that long a time. Somehow after I turned 50 time is no longer snowballing gaining momentium. At this point I'm freefalling because this gigantic snowball rolled off a cliff. The end is a sudden deceleration...
