New York NYC RFF Meet-up wants to help fellow RFF member Phil_F_NM

Wow, then we are incredibly close in the fund raising -- only $100 or so more to go. Nice to know we all came together for a good cause. Nice work everyone.

Looks like Dave lackey will look into a $700 Nikon D2Xs for us.

I have to admit, I know nothing of these Nikon DSLRs... the specs (which I can look up) or the used prices. Help with this would be appreciated in determining the best option.

Be glad to John. Used these cameras professionally for a long time. The owner works right next to where we are when we are in Atlanta, so meeting him will be simple. He will call me tonight and discuss a time to see the D2Xs.

what camera was stolen?
should it just be replaced or is this one a bit better.
better is good, less is not so good.

The D2Hs was stolen (along with a D2X). I leave it up to the gang to decide which replacement camera. I can eyeball and checkout the D2Xs in person. Both the D2Hs and D2Xs are awesome.

my only concern is not to buy a lesser model than was stolen...i don't follow nikon so i have no idea of the models.
you guys are doin' good!

Guys, the following was stolen:

"While I was at work, someone broke in to my apartment and
stole all of my digital gear. Nikon D2x and D2Hs. A 17-55mm G DX ED
AFS, a 14mm f/3.5 Sigma AF and my just purchased for a song and cleaned
24mm f/2.8 AIS."

I'm thinking the D2x is the more important model. The D2Hs was for more for infrared I believe. We are at $647.40!!!! RFF-ers are awesome.

IIRC, the D2HS were targeted towards newspaper sports photographers, since D2HS' were capaable of frame rates up to 8fps. I believe in all other respects, including IQ and higher megapixel count (if I'm not mistaken), many Nikonistas preferred the D2XS.

I'm late to this thread. I got it that Phil got ripped off and that this thread is about raising money to buy him a replacement camera/lens, etc. How would I do that. How much needs to be raised?

We are at $707.40 and it appears we need $700-800 to get the camera we want. Anything over what we need to replace the camera will be used for lenses or accessories. We are also accepting equipment donations as well.

Thanks all. We are at $837.40 from 26 donations!!!! Holy %$^#!

Dave Lackey is meeting with someone in person tonight about a Nikon D2Xs for $700. If that pans out, it might be a good buy since dave can check it out in person (I believe). The rest can be used for a lens.

I pitched in. I hope what ever we can end up getting, it will go some way to rectifying Phil's situation. Given how much gear he has lost, it is likely going to just be a start.

Anyone is free to donate.

Phil has been notified of this thread. I've asked for his opinion on the purchase. He asked for some time to process it all. :)

Please don't forget all the Nikon accessories and spare glass that was donated.

Cal

Of course. Sorry, I've been in touch with some via PM and thanked them there. This has been a bit to keep up with all day, so please forgive me if I've missed thanking anyone. :)
