going to NYC on Saturday for a few days.

not sure which camera(s) I should bring. i should have the following by the end of the week: GRD3, G11, M6 (with 35 f2.5, 40 f1.4, 50 f2), and a nikon nikkormat (with 24, 35, 50, etc.).

if you were going - not necessarily for a photo trip - which one(s) would you bring? provided my GRD is here in time, that is for sure. may bring m6 and 50 as well.

also, what should my wife and i go see? we're planning to check out a show or two. anything worth seeing?

If photography isn't going to be a big part of the trip, bring something small. M6 + 1 lens is a good choice! I would probably bring the 35mm though for one single lens. It can work better on the narrow streets in Manhattan.

As for broadway shows, I'm sorry but I can't help there! Did you mean Broadway or other types of shows?

There's a little place called the Metropolitan Museum. Bunch of shows there worth seeing.

Strongly recommend The Jewish Museum, which has the exhibit "The Radical Camera: New York's Photo League, 1936-1951", and the International Center of Photography. Of course, that's if you're coming for that type of thing. Otherwise, there's Central Park for strolling, , the Guggenheim, South Street Seaport, Staten Island ferry, natural History museum, the Frick Museum. Have fun!

Take a setup for low-light shooting. Not sure where you're coming from, but days are getting short—and just because it's dark, you don't want to stop shooting. 🙂

I'd go as light as possible and the fastest lens for the most flexability. You'll be walking a lot so a lot of gear works against you. Also wide is perfered. In NYC you can really get close to the crowds, and a 50 becomes too tight.

I was up there week before last and have been on pleasure and business trips many times. Don't make the mistake of taking too much gear. I've done that too many times. Last trip, I took my IIIf and a 50mm Summar. I ended up enjoying the shooting even more than usual. Tips on using a 35mm are also good. That lens would probably be better than a 50mm. I've used a 28mm too. The point is, pick one or maybe two. Night shooting is fun too, as pointed out by another poster.

As for shows, we saw "Venus in Fur," which is a relatively new, funny and extremely well acted play.

Have a great time. NYC is Disneyland for adults.

The Leica Gallery has some interesting things on right now. As well, the ICP is always worth a trip. We also visited the Neue Gallery two weeks ago, and the pieces there are spectacular.

M6 & 50mm + the GRD3...which was your instinct too. Most of the NYC people on this thread do not believe in small sensor cameras, but I do. The Ricoh is truly pocketable and can be brought anywhere... especially when you don't want a larger camera with you.

i got it because the last trip i went on, the m6+35 sat in my bag or at the hotel, because i didn't want to pull it out. i think i might take the m6+50, as you suggest; if i don't use it a tonne, i may sell it altogether.

i think it was actually because i could keep the little, unobtrusive camera in my pocket and pull it out on a moment's notice.

good thing about travelling to NYC is that film prices are the cheapest you will find (even slide film).

When I go to NYC, i always rock the m6 + 28mm lens.

I'm with Helen on this one. NYC has night-life, interior spaces. I often make sure that I have a fast lens and a wide lens. But since the 40 and the 35 are so close, I think you could make do with just the 40/1.4.

Last time I went I took the ZM 21/2.8 and a 50/1.4.
