OK Folks, what is Missing? How can we improve RFF ?

I'm not thinking this site needs major improvements. It'spretty good the way it is. I agree with two suggestions made in orevious posts:

(1) a "like" button (or equivalent)

(2) a better way of accessing the institutional knowledge here. I've been around for a few years now, and recall that there were great threads on films, developers, lenses, etc., in years past that have all but disappeared. Maybe an improved search function? I think there have been some good suggestions above to address this.

Above all, this is a great site, and thanks for hosting it!

How about someone making a preset for Lightroom that will allow us to upload photos using the Lightroom Publish feature like many other sites do...

People -- the participants -- make up a forum and there is a great bunch here. Always something interesting to read. I say this despite the fact that I rarely drag out my Leica IIIF, Rollei 35 or the 3.5F Rollei that I've had since the 1950s.

Indeed! This is a real pain here. Rather than just limit size though, software that automatically resizes larger images to fit the window size would be best.

Facebok "like" and Google + "+1" are fine over at those places. Don't need that here.

Mostly, I miss some of the people who are no longer here. But that's just life, and not something the owner or mods can fix.

This place is bliss for a vintage film shooter. I've learned lots about equipment, film stocks (thanks for the heads-up on Neopan 400s demise, and Adorama's sale!), photo activities, met more new kindred spirits, bought and sold more equipment than at any other spot, anywhere. I also love the fact that I can purchase things with complete confidence from RFF members--I've NEVER been disappointed, which is more than I can say for camera shows and that auction site.

Here the majority are pros. I do understand their needs and mentality.
I am instead a dilettante (with 60+ years of experience)
I would like to have an amateur corner where one:
1- Does not perceive as a sin his reluctance to post photos
2- Is spared the unconfortable feeling to be in every pro's ignore list

Actually there is one thing that bugs me but god only knows how to address it. People are constantly posting oversize images in threads that instantly make the thread unwieldy with the need to side scroll. Threads that are affected in this way are a pain and I avoid them.

Though I don't know if this an be corrected with software ... I doubt it!

The general excellence of RFF and its users is a given but finding stuff I've put here can be a pain. I've subscribed to loads of threads over the years but trying to find them in my list of subscribed threads is nearly impossible as they're spread over so many pages. Please make it possible to display the list of subscribed threads on a single page or organise them in some way or else be able to search them.

The integration of the gallery and forums isn't great. I want to see the threads in which I have posted a particular photo or else list of all the threads in which I have posted photos.

More than the size of photos in threads the thing that drives me nuts is when someone insists on posting a zillion photos one after the other so that the thread just gets taken over. Yes, I know you're a genius but I am too! So maybe some kind of limit on this would be good?

One of the nice features of RFF is that it doesn't have the competitive atmosphere of a camera club, so no competitions please! As far as look and feel goes, I like it! A bit old fashioned is fine if it does the job and the white text on black b/g is good after staring at black on white all day.

Hi!

As an inveterate 'Feed Reader' (RSS preferred) it would be excellent if you could add such a facility to the forum. It would immediately find itself added to 'akregator' along with my many other 'feeds' and would be guaranteed pride of place among my 'read first' feeds.

Don't tell me, there's all ready one here and I've missed it over the past decade or so!!! ;-)

Regarding those comments about changing the size of the image when it is too large - the answer is that yes, it is completely possible (with Javascript, JQuery) and yes please do it! Please look into responsive design.

The other item is the general layout and look and feel. As I type this I am seeing a text edit box with options/icons that are very outdated. I know many people don't mind the look and feel but being from the start-up world, having a modern look is a must.

Some folks say that new designs will give them "too much flashing things..." etc etc. But modern web design means simplification and usability to me (ie - less flashy things and cleaner, easier to read)

WetPixel isn't the most modern, but it's an upgrade from this in terms of design IMHO:

... not only do I 'not mind' the present look and feel, I positively prefer it to that of many others, including that WetPixel example. I choose to view RFFM in the -- VBP Hex Cell Xpand option mode, and find it clear, concise and uncluttered. Not that I would necessarily object to a 'more modern' web design if it really delivered simplification and usability.
But, at my age, I don't think I could take another Flickr-style continual change of format and change of user interface access to functionality 🙁.

Not sure I agree with the "modern look is a must"; we have 56,000 some odd members here so there are at least a few people who don't object to the look of RFF.

Personally, I do like the dark background and light text here--I have tried all the varied options for RFF and the "graphite expand" style suits me best.

That said, there is at least one thing I saw at Wetpixels that appeals: the RSS feed option. The content there looks interesting as well, I'll be going back to read through some of it, thanks for the link!

One thing I will suggest for us here at RFF is:
A link to our galleries in the block of info under our member names.

And, please no change just for its own sake!

I agree with improving the search function. I miss some of the old "grouches" also. That is a personality problem though. I wish some that left would come back.

I mostly enjoy RFF 'as is'. This said, you could improve by making posting/sharing through the RFF galleries more accessible/easier.
