OK, this is getting irritating

I have deleted all the pics from my gallery and will be de-registering today. This site is not safe or stable and that is probably not the fault of the admin at the present time.

Dis-appearing posts, DOS attacks etc. Cannot risk it.

Thanks for welcoming me and allowing me to join with you for the last few months.

I never realised that a bit of server down-time could be life threatening.

Some joke surely? What risk? Do you imagine that your computer will self-destruct because a mySQL database somewhere on the internet plays up?

If my cable tv company goes down for an hour or two I don't not watch Fox just in case it will harm my television.

blade runner is one of my all time favorites! can't believe it's 24 years old!! special effects hold up better than almost anything from that era! but the director's cut is crap. i prefer the voiceover.

I actually prefer the Director's Cut. I feel the voice over detracts from the film, I get the impression it was only added to dumb things down a bit for those who didn't understand what was going on.

Good scifi reading: Larry Niven's Ringworld and Smoke Ring books. William Gibson's Neuromancer books (bang on the money considering Neuromancer was written 22 years ago).

You noob. What's a hacked site gonna do to you?

must be an old timer, not very savvy with this forum stuff.

<oooh and this is a great post to mark as my 700th>

No, no, he's right! I had a hacked computer once. The laser in my CD player got out and wandered around the house. It bit my dog and chased the cats, then it snorted up all my demon powder and fell asleep in the garage. You just can't risk these things.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Since we're quoting pop-culture references in light of RFf's technical difficulties, I'll offer a few:

"Oh, dear, it looks like reality is on the blink again." - Marvin, The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (original radio series)

"Bloody typical, they've gone back to metric without telling us" - Public Works man, Brazil

- Barrett

That film is definitely in my top 10. (today, at least.)

I'll be removing my CD drive from my computers! That sounds serious. Need to remove any CDs I may have burned and put them in a duct-taped ziploc bag. I'll need to quarantine my Pink Floyd CDs. My God!! My Mary Poppins DVD!!

Sorry to hear that.

I wonder if "de-registering" would disqualify someone from the RFF photo contest?

Alas, Bill, the wind blew the other way.

Terri Gilliam's films are great. I didn't like The Brothers Grimm, I think he had satisfy-the-bottom-line-fatigue there.

You'll probably like "Kafka" w/Jeremy Irons.

One DVD I'm glad I don't have with this server clock problem. One cannot risk it ;)

Well this is nothing compared to what happened at Nikonians last fall. They lost everything; I mean every single post.

Yikes

Jon,
I wonder if this is a good example of the pitfalls of the rise of easily-obtainable tools such as blogs, wikis, and forums. I have no idea about Jorge's server/host setup and so am speaking abstractly here.

Podasts and blogs and to a lesser extent wikis and forums have given a lot of power to individuals. I got a site, I download some software, set up a mySQL db and do some configuration. Voila, I have a blog. If my hosting company offers Fantastico, I can do that with 3 mouse clicks only.

The thing is that just because a hosting company offers mySQL and the option of installing stuff like wordpress or, for instance, vBulletin doesn't mean that ou've got a setup that can handle it. I can install SMF right now, re skin it, etc, but I wouldn't want to take on that stress on my hosting setup unless I paid for the dedicated server arrangement.

I was nervous about doing the unofficial RFF blog, but that's a different beast entirely than a forum.

not a very computer savvy guy...what's the risk to me if the site gets hacked?
if posts/pics were stolen for another use, what is the difference from someone coming in and doing a bunch of cut & pastes?

Agreed.

Unless you have decided to post some personal information - i.e. full name, address, phone number, credit card information, Social security number (or Social insurance number) etc. etc. etc. there's no risk/concern if someone hacks this site.

The lot of you who are complaining should take a big step away from the computer and just relax - I love this site as much as the next guy but getting all upset over "missing posts" and numbers and such isn't the end of the world.

Hey.. if it's stressing you out that much just go take a walk outside and take some photos.. and you'll inevitably come across a homeless person who's thinking about where his/her next meal is coming from.. and hopefully this will resolve you of any stress that you may have had.

Dave

I can tell that none of you ever had a computer catch on fire while running their program.

But that has only happened once to me. Not bad for 30 years in the field.

The switching power supplies could not keep up with the DMA/CPU-Intensive bursts. They caught fire. FPS-120b on a Vax 11/780 for you old guys. Some of my simulation code took 30 days to run.

One time I had a printer start shooting sprockets out of it. One got stuck in a ceiling tile. and a TI thermal printer shoot flames through the paper. I found some undocumented Opcodes on the TI-58 programmable calculator.

And a line-printer that started shooting paper 5 feet into the air.

And that was before I networked to anything.
