Olympus Mju II / Stylus Epic. Thanks Ebay !

Hi All.

Was lucky enough to get a Mju II on Ebay for £6.50 in really good condition. No more excuses for leaving home without a camera now. Mine is silver but I think I will look for a black one too..? I was unsure where to post this as it is not really a rangefinder, however any hints and tips for getting the most out of this midget marvel would be welcome. I will be feeding it on Neopan 400 re-coded to Ei200 and may later try Neopan 1600 @ Ei800 once I get used to it. Do you have a good page that describes how to recode Tri-X 400 to 1600?

I have a Mju:II black myself, love it! So small and nice.

I love the little Epic (I have three!) It's truly compact and pocketable, the lens is tack sharp, and it's weather-resistant.

I travelled in Turkey a few years ago with just the Epic and a pocketful of Provia slide film. It was a very fun experience.

Not many tips to offer. A half-press of the shutter locks the exposure. Pressing the two little buttons on the back turns on the spot meter. The camera treats uncoded cassettes as 100ISO, I think.

I use this as a guide and just a sharp pocket knife and some tape. Just a matter of scrape and tape accordingly.

2 presses on the left button shuts off the flash. I really like mine, but it is too loud so I got the XA.

Learning how to turn off the flash and on the spot meter is all you really need. Fantastic cameras.

I too have taken loads of travel shots with mine.

This is such a cute camera. I worked my first to death. Bought one other when they it were set to special price here in germany and found another one (like new with leather case) for 20 Euro
at a fleamarket. One is in use by my 11-year-old son who loves it!
The most important thing is to set the flash off and the spot metering on.

Not willing to throw sand in cake, will tell that half-press position of release button is provided by fragile spring under button. Maybe I'm such a jerk, but mine broke after years of happy use. I recommend to minimize "empty" half-depresses - when you pre-focus though don't release shutter; that said, depress button when you are sure - it doesn't has durability to last for decades of use (sure, it will serve long on "roll per year" load).

Currently I'm on mid of first roll after replacing spring 🙂

This thread probably belongs in the "point and shoot" forum. I'm not a mod or anything, but just a heads up for next time.

Got mine for $3.99 at a thrift store. All I had to do was replace the battery. Great little camera. I shoot almost 100% B&W in my Bessa lately so it's a nice backup with some Velvia or Ektar 100.
