Just a quick poll regarding, what I consider to be a very underestimated camera, the Olympus trip 35

I wanted to make a thread about the Trip as well. How sharp is it compared to the XA?

Never gave it much thought, until I got one in a box with a lot of old rubbish that I was to take to the dump for some friends. It was in perfect working order so I decided to give it a spin. I was rather amazed at the results. Almost as good as my C35, but with a somewhat different feeling to the photos. Hard to put in words 🙄
No wonder that Oly could sell +10mill. of the little pet.
Just recently found out that the Trip 35 has a meter lock - you know press the button half way down and hold it there until you are ready to shoot. Wish I had found out a bit sooner. Not sure if this works on all the models though?

In certain conditions and there have been times when the images produced by my trip have out performed the XA, of course they are quite different beasts but I feel the trip is a very very underestimated camera. Sometimes it produces great images, I'm a big fan of Zuiko glass. I'm 45 now and can rember using a trip in my early teens, my first camera was a 126 format Kodak instamtic x77 and I upgraded that to a trip in about 1978, the trip holds a lot of good memories for me

Don't get me wrong, it's a great camera with great optics at a great price. It's just I never really got along with any scale-focus 35mm cameras.

Pretty sharp too. I was planning for my XA to be just an outdoor camera anyway, but the XA can do night time, and more timed exposures indoors... say, you're in Sainte Chapelle in Paris and you've gripped an XA to a chair with a gorillapod while the guy with the D3X is pouting because someone shouted at him in French telling him he can't use a tripod.
Still, the Trip seems sharp and it is a very, very beautiful camera. Very eye catching especially with leather on it.

What's this 'have used' rubbish? I use mine regularly and love it.
I don't remember the Trip ever being particularly underestimated - people have always had good things to say about it.

That photo from Wakarimasen is great.
I've had a Trip for a couple of years and use it occasionally. I had a small collection of Olympus compacts but eventually sold them all except the Trip.

Ruby, I'm not going to get into a semantic discussion regarding how I worded my post, I also use and have done so for years, my Trip. I feel the current price of this camera suggests that the general populous underestimates this little Gem.

Touché. My phase of lomography has passed and I probably produced far too many out of focus images on it when I forgot about the switch on the side...

I own a Trip but do not use due to an expired selenium cell. IMHO the price reflects the immense volume sold (which suggests that when new it wasn't underestimated) versus the shrinking user base for film P&S cameras, whatever their qualities. Check the original price of a Leica M5 with other cameras of that era and then say the Trip is currently overpriced. It just doesn't make sense to use a basic camera with a limited square aperture etc when high-end cameras of the same era can be had affordably. No discredit to the Trip and with due recongition of the cult following.

I've got one (father's) and used it once.
Problem is that It was stored in a cabinet. Has got lots of fungus (yet it's rather sharp, but shadows look hazy) and now I found it doesn't wind well (the transport pulls back). Also, my scale focusing skills are pretty bad. Of 36 got about 8 sharp shots.

I found my Trip 35 at the flea market and it has consistently produced great images. I often let my 9 year old son use it. Here's a crappy cell phone shot of him shooting me while we were hiking in the rain through a botanical garden. I'm waiting for his roll of Ektachrome E200 to come back from the lab.
Oh, and I use a soft release on it which just adds to the experience.

Two weeks ago I found a perfectly good Minolta Hi-Matic S2 at the thrift shop for $3. This is the one that has 38/2.8 and all automated exposure. I absolutely love it! Zone focus, super quick to shoot, takes 2 AA batteries, and standard 49mm screw threads for filters and hood.
