i had an x700, very nice rig...
i'm thinking something more basic and less electronic...

but still open to all suggestions.

What is your budget Joe? And is 21mm close enough, or does it have to be a 24mm, no more, no less? I confess that, if I was seeking a ultra wide angle today in a mechanical body, and could have the pick of all options, it would, without a doubt, be a 21mm Biogon to go with my Contax II. I suppose a decent Kiev would also be an option if you needed something affordable to put it on. Separate RF/VF of course. But what a lens. I'm sure I'm in the minority, here. But take a look at some images made with those classic Zeiss lenses. Ridiculously sharp, age notwithstanding.

- Bang for the buck and speed ? OM1 or OM2 with 24/2 (US 400 or so)
- Performance / low budget ? R4* + Color Skopar 25/4 (US 800 or so)
- Performance / higher budget ? 0.58 M6 + ZM 25/2.8 (> US 1500)

Now, I don't shoot 24, only 28. If 28 is OK, you want max performance at smallest $, get any of the Nikon FM* or an F3 with 28/2.8 AIS (should run less than US 250).

How about something unusual, like a Fujifilm Natura 24mm f1.9 compact camera?

It doesn't meet most of the requirements though, except for it being a film camera. But it's small enough to bring out with your other cameras. The Natura is also hard to come by as it was only released in Japan.

my criteria is...
film camera
easily obtainable
and fitted with the best 24mm lens of the same brand as camera

not sure i will follow through on a purchase but i'm thinking about it.

I've had a few others (Olympus, Contax, and Minolta), but liked the Nikon FM2 or FE2 with the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AI-S the most out of the SLRs. I recommend that setup.

(The Leica M4-P fitted with an Elmarit-M 24mm f/2.8 ASPH was probably the better performer, but I didn't use it as much as the Nikon. I had this same experience with today's M-P and Elmar-M 24mm ... I find I prefer using the Elmarit-R 24 on the SL more.)

The Zuiko wide angles are quite sharp, and would be even cheaper if they were not sought after by Canon users, who can use these with adapters.

Joe, I cannot tell what would float your boat in your gear selection, but I have been having a great time with an Olympus OM-1 MD with an Olympus Winder 2 attached, and a Zuiko 24/2.8. It's good enough for my purposes, and easy to use. The above pictures were taken with that outfit.

PS: This was Arista Premium 400 developed using Chris Crawford's recipe, given at his website, which is R09 for 11 minutes at 20C.
