On the contrary, if the S100, Canon G-series or Leica X1/2 are considered Point and Shoot, why not X100? Just because its auto mode isn't that great?
daveleo
what?
I wouldn't call the X100 or Rollei 35 point and shoot cameras.
I read that comment 20+ years ago, regarding the Konica Hexar AF (a most beloved camera).
"Point and shoot" is NOT a curse. In the case of a few cameras (The Hexar AF, the X100, Leica X1 (digital) & CM (film), Polaroid SX-70 . . . . . ), "P&S" rules the day . . . some P&S designs are among the best cameras ever made.

I'm not saying these cameras are not P&S cameras because they are good cameras, I'm saying they are not P&S cameras because they are not P&S cameras.

Elaborate on that perhaps. They can point and shoot quite effectively. They have a fixed lens. What else doesn't qualify them for the designation?

You CAN take control if you want to. To my mind P&S cameras are only those which give you no control and no choice.

Ride, dive, shoot.
Yet sadly Leica X1/2 are "considered" point and shoot (discussed in P&S forum) and don't have their own forum board like X100 so I guess X2 is OK on this thread...
Also, although it is a rangefinder camera, I guess XA is also considered as P&S?

This looks like a very nice camera. Is there a new sheriff in town, Rollei Prego 90?

Canon Sure Shot 60 Zoom by Greyscale3, on Flickr
As you can see, I paid a quarter for this camera. The camera works, but the zoom switch is missing. I can zoom, but it is kind of luck of the draw as to what length I will end up at. But it was well worth the quarter for the nifty zipper film canister attached to the lanyard strap.

Absolutely. Set the hyperfocal distance/f5.6. Point. Shoot. Enjoy.

Stop !!!!!!!
Time to define what Point and Shoot really is. To me, adjustable focus is AKA zone focus thus not P&S. I'm thinking any auto exposure or just 1 set aperture and shutter speed, auto or fixed focus lens is the essence of "point & shoot". I even think that "flash off" control is stretching it a bit - nice to have the option.
Then again, infinity pre-set is nice, adjustable ISO . . . . . . ah, well - you know. Ultimately a pure point and shoot camera may be the kind that TIME sent to you for "free" with a paid subscription.

I think of a "point and shoot" as any fixed lens camera that has an "auto" mode of some form. You point, perhaps compose, and shoot. Everything is done for you. This applies whether it is digital or film. All other options are just that, options.

For the purposes of this thread P&S is any camera I care to consider that I pointed and shooted!

Before you all have a conniption and a flame war about What is and is not a point and shoot, I have a thread here for you:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/...cameras/160418-what-what-not-point-shoot.html
We already had that flame war in connection to what cameras were eligible for a "Point and shoot camera photo contest".

This is actually a nice camera. The only pity is that you cant preset the f1.4 aperture. The camera sets aperture and shutter speed automatically.

I'm going to dig my ML out of storage and take it for a spin with Kodak Gold 200. We should compare notes.
