Think of it like this. You are having people over for dinner, so you hook up your iPod to your stereo system to provide a little dinner music (let's say, a spirited nu-metal playlist, with a little Erik Satie thrown in for good measure). You now have two volume controls, the one on the iPod and the one on the stereo. Turning up the volume on the iPod is like increasing the aperture on the G1: you're letting in more light (audio signal). If you turn the iPod down really low, it's like using a tiny aperture, thus letting in less light (audio signal), so now you have to turn the stereo volume (the EVF sensitivity) way up.

The G1 adjusts the "stereo volume" automatically, to give a consistent "volume" level. The reason the EVF doesn't look as good when it's doing this is because it's applying gain to a weak signal. Similarly, if you use your stereo volume to hugely amplify a quiet iPod, your music will be intelligible, but not sound very good.

Just because you can do something doesn't make it the best solution.

The price difference between the G1 and the M8.x is large enough that people will be willing to accept compromises that wouldn't be acceptable with other cameras.

If nothing else, it does make for some very interesting possibilities.
