Passing on a black chrome M4 because what I really want is a…

I personally would have preferred the black chrome m4, as BC grows scarcer by the day, while painted cameras grow more numerous. But I suppose an advantage of painted cameras is that, if you don't care for the look as the paint wears away, you can simply repaint it.

I sent a painted baseplate (graphite black Cerakote) to a client to compare vs black chrome. Here is his report:

"Here are two comparison photos with your sample and a new black chrome M7 base plate. Yours is slightly more matte and leans gray compared to the Leica finish. But they are very close and without a side-by-side comparison, I don't think anyone could tell it wasn't original."

I take care of my cameras but don’t use cases in recent years, or even bags much. The light bright marks on my M9-P bought and used daily since 2012 are a lot more noticeable (but not very) than the very light wear on the chrome of my M2 which has been around the world a few times with me over 48 years. And the M5 chrome looks almost as good. The black chrome M5 hides its brutalist lines too much. Even the aluminum silver M6 has held up very well. The chrome work up the M5 is different to the modern chrome on Leicas.

The black paint on a Leica II from 1932 is astonishing. Finally the M4-2 and my 2013 Monochrom transition from black to grey just from the handling. I’ve cured any lust I had for black paint, only inasmuch as I have no interest in paying for it. I’m currently having serviced a chrome IIIf in mint condition, likely barely used when I got it a few years ago, judging by its interior. But that black paint IIIf above could have me re-thinking this a little.

How about this Shintaro BP M2 which was made for Tom A. Comes in a nice case too.

P.S. no connection to seller

P.P.S. At these prices I would seriously consider a used BP Leica MP

I find it very surprising that Leica offers the MP in black paint but only offers the M-A in black chrome. Not that I'm in the market for a $6,000 camera, but it's a strange decision by Leica.

I think the black paint cameras are lovely, but to be honest I've never cared enough to warrant paying for one.
I spend much more time looking through a camera than looking at one. 😉

I have five different black chrome Leica M's on the shelf behind me. They all look great; they all get used, a lot. They work well, they don't break, they make photos I like. What more would I want?
