Photo Software Maker's Forum at RFF ?

I am in discussion with a major Photo Software maker concerning the possibility of hosting their own software forum at RFF.

In this two way interaction, experts would answer your questions, while also promoting their products and taking your suggestions for needed software improvements.

To me it seems win win.

Even if you shoot 100% analog, you could still pick up pointers on scanning and printing.

You can discuss any maker's products in the existing software forums. That would not change.

The new forum would only be about this one brand, as their techs are only able to answer questions on their own products.

You are missing the point Ranchu. It would be an opportunity for RFF members to get technical info they likely not have had access to before on premiere products, plus being able to input directly to the decision makers how to improve their products to better serve RFF members.

I believe I'm directly on point. It's not in a software company's interest to tell me technical aspects of their software, as revealing them helps their competitors. You'll never get a straight answer, just a bunch of waffling. Also, all a software company is going to tell you about how to do something is how their software can do it, not the best way, if that is something their software can't do. And watch all the sockpuppet accounts appear to bump their threads.

They're motivated by their best interests, not mine.

If it truly is a major photo software company (like that one on Park Avenue in San Jose, CA) that is used by a great majority of RFF'ers, then I think it would be a boon to RFF. OTOH, if their product is used only by a small number of RFF'ers then I don't really see the point.

My question: if it is that one Park Ave. in SJ or another company with multiple photo software products, would the forum include discussion of ALL of that software company's photo-related products or just one? Different products have different product managers and potentially different technical advisors and support staff.

I think it's a great idea, but I have doubts about the participation of the makers. I would hope they would embrace the opportunity but I am a skeptic.

I like the idea! Even more if it is *that* particular company.

I have a lot of "suggestions" about the software I use in general, for want of a better word 😀 Good to know that there'll be a place where I can bang the table and expect some to hear the noise.

I'm a linux user so *that* photo software company probably doesn't serve any interests of mine and, as a matter of fact, actively prevents porting of their products to be used on a linux computer.

Even if the software company were Novell or another linux-friendly corporation, I feel like their pressure would adversely affect the overall discussion.

That said, I don't want a bigger corporate presence here.

However, you (Stephen) are the head bartender so, the decision is yours ultimately. I appreciate you polling us and asking our opinions.

I can't see a negative outcome. The Software company has more to loose than RFF membership.

Any chance for us users to request new features and standards as welll as critic existing offerings is most welcome.

If by some chance the software provider does not listen to input after getting it on this new forum, ....how can that be different from them not hearing it because the forum does not presently exist?

Sounds like a great thing to try out and see how it goes. How much use it gets depends on the vendor and their products, of course. But heck, this is a commercial website. Getting the participation of businesses is a good thing.

Ranchu has a valid point. And you've asked here, so he is expressing his point/concern.
You could've just introduced it without asking. Why did you ask at all, if you dismiss the opposing view?

If its a company that is willing to bring a good scanning/conversion software for colour negatives i am the first to applaud.
(something like the kodak/pakon software for other scanners would be great already 😀 ...)

I think it's not a bad idea, but...I am concerned too about a software maker pushing their product over actually helpful advice and that rubbing some people the wrong way. Even if that doesn't happen, there's always a self-appointed brand (or method) evangelist that will hijack the college campus mall and implore (at best) all others to repent.

For example, one of the never-ending questions: VueScan or "X"? How do you make "X" work like VueScan --or viceversa? While that seems innocent and straight-forward enough (save the "X" part), one can find enough "X"-ists and VueScanistas who can/will ::cough:: particularly and loudly derail a perfectly legit discussion. I cannot see a flamewar benefiting a sponsor, unless, of course, if any (in the whole sense of the word, "any") publicity is irrevocably good publicity.
