Photography and Architecture? Do we have any Architects here?

Im in the process of making a life changing move. I have been in my current job just over 8 years as an Electrical Design Draftsman and have recently decided to take the plunge back into full time study to become an Architect.
It has been a life long dream for me to study Architecture but wasn't possible for both my partner and i to study. But now my opportunity has come.

At the moment im writing a letter and sorting my creative portfolio to support my application to University.

Im wondering if there are any architects on the forums that may be able to offer some general advice / guidance to me. What not to put in. what should be in there.

Im finding it very daunting to write a document which will basically decide if i pack my bags leave my job and move to another city.

My portfolio intention is to show a few photographs that show creativity.
Things like light interaticnt with different surfaces and shadows.
Something showing hunman interaction with a public space
Something using shapes and textures.

Im considering a few images off my site are suitable but i also have a heap of negative yet to scan.

Anyway i would just really appreciate some general advice from people.

Adrian, I think what you are planning is a good move, because the creativity in architecture I'm sure will suit you very well. Not that drafting is necessarily uncreative - many technical skill have a fundamental design element.
I get the feeling there are a number of architects and ex-architects on RFF. I would be surprised if there wasn't, because the two pursuits have many intersections. I am an architect myself, although I'm not sure how useful my advice would be to you, for your university application task.
To cross promote our Sydney RFF get together, we can talk more about this on Saturday, except that we haven't set a time or exact place yet.

That was exactly my reason for chasing it. I went into the career because it was a logical well paying opportunity out of school. Found the drafting office after 12 months and couldn't wait to get back. Now I can't wait to be somewhere that I have more involvement in the design process from a creative aspect. I find Electrical drafting is very technical but there isn't much in the area of creativity.

Will be happy to have a chat about it on the weekend. I added a time and place to that topic. Was in the hope that someone else may have nominated.

Similar story to mine - I worked for four years straight out of school before taking the plunge and studying full time to become an architect.
BTW, for my first interview at University, I had included some of my photographs which went down really well.....

I am an architect as well! ...and my interest in photography started as an intern about a decade ago...

It seems to me that is a nice time to study architecture!
Good luck with the portfolio! and interesting photographs always gives extra credit!!! ;-)
