I've only spent a little time there but I loved it. I was hanging out in an old warehouse in Brunswick with a friend and I remember looking around the area and wishing I had time to go for a walk and take some photos. It would have looked incredible in gritty black and white.
Photographing 'pretty' areas becomes boring and limiting very quickly IMO.

I was thinking of you when I made my post about wanting to go to Melbourne ... I would photograph that city the way you photograph New York.

BINGO!!! It is where you head is, not where your feet are or what is in front of your eyes.
Many need to ask themselves if this is the reason why their travel photos are lacking.

For my own personal comfort, I'd live in Hawaii, or maybe somewhere else hot and beautiful. For image making, I think the red centre of Aus, or the canyon lands of the USA, not sure I'd want to live in those places though...

EU, move like locust. Came, enjoy it, and then move to the next spot nearby and go on from there until returning to the place I started.
Wide area, but I don't feel like I'm good enough to be able to keep motivating myself in the same place. That's for the more dedicated and experienced.

I just came back from two places that are the most fascinating photography destinations I've ever been to (and I've been to many countries..), enough for me to want to move there at least for a while: Japan and Afghanistan.
In case the latter sounds like a crazy idea, I may add that nowhere have I found more humble, generous, hospitable and keen-on-being-photographed people than in Afghanistan. A truly mind opening experience, where any amateur "people-photographer" feels like Steve McCurry (well, at least while shooting.. when it comes to the results one coems back to reality..)

Burma (Myanmar) was great, lovely people, coloful scenes and not too many turists. With the domestic problems, it might not be the best place to settle. Never been to Sri Lanka, but it probably is a lot like Birma, including domestic problems. I guess Japan or South-Korea might be very interesting, or China. And New-York City, wel, it is NYC, the city that never sleeps 🙂

For me, I would choose to live in Bhutan for a year or two. I would document the culture there, the people and Buddhism in particular.
I would take my Leica M kit and my XPAN kit, a ton of film, my tripod, 42" collapsible reflector and probably my Metz 45 CL-4 flash, although I prefer working with available light far and away over using flash.

The Rockies. I'd have mountains around me. A relatively, short drive east to the plains and west to the coast. Appalachian mounts would be good too.

My dream scenario actually almost happened... moving to the Philippines (where I was born and raised) and earning an income comparable to my current one here in SoCal. The huge difference in the cost of living between SoCal and Manila would have allowed for quite a bit of discretionary income, which I would have used to explore different locales.
The photo ops would have been endless, not only in the Philippines, but also throughout Southeast Asia and the Pan-Pacific region in general.

Roger: We think alike in realizing that our "fantasies" are realistically achievable. While there are still places I want to go, they just have not made it to the top of list yet. If there was someplace else I wanted to live, I would move there. If there is someplace I want to go photograph, I make a trip.
I certainly am not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. But I do find ways to doing what I want to do rather than sitting at home fantasizing about doing it.

Think it would be Italy and/or Iceland for me. Turning 50 next September and it won't be a fantasy it will be a reality. Am thinking 2 months with a week on one of those photography tours through Tuscany advertised on the LUF site and then time in Sicily, Sardinia and Capri. Nice present to myself🙂

Living a bit of a dream right now.
Quit my job and am paddling my kayaks and keeping the wife happy by doing the housework. (she's a fellow at Deakin Uni and works way to hard)
When I run out of pocket money I will have to start working again but I do hope to keep it up for a while. One thing I am not going to do is sell any Photographic gear to fund this, been there and still feel regret.
On Topic
I have been to a lot of places and agree with Bob.
What I would like to do is to get a series going on this passion of mine which is a bit of a challenge in a logistic way, the most interesting shots are where you want your hands on your paddle and lots of salt water flying around, from the beach means Tele and having a higher perspective.
It will be fun solving these problems.
