New York PhotoPlusExpo 2017

It seems like I'll be heading down to Washington D.C. on Friday the 27th with "Maggie" and will miss the PhotoPlusExpo because Maggie will be presenting a TED Talk. Maggie was solicited to give a talk on fashion, and this is really a big honor and is a mucho big deal.

Anyways she needs my support.

Check out the Dev Hynes-Charlotte Gainsbourg music video Maggie is in. Filmed in Westchester. As far as gigs go music videos are very long exhausting days.

Sorry for having to bail on our Meet-Up.

This is a bump.

Technology-Entertainment-Design and the crossover of ideas is what T.E.D. Talks are about.

Anyways I never heard of them before, but I now kinda understand it is a really big deal to get asked to do a TED Talk. The presentation gets recorded and is archived. The format is 18 minutes.

Again I apologize for pre-empting the PhotoPlusExpo.

Devin,

Thanks so much.

Over a quarter million followers.

I really like that she has moderated with her schedule. There is now a lot less stress. I kinda moved her into "Art Mode" where we dream and plan more and are more thoughtful. Her life use to be overly busy and fur-net-ick. Now things are more sustainable.

Recently she recruited a handful of very smart interns to train as her support group. This is all good.

The Grad school where Maggie works is paying for her travel and lodging. I basically have to only pay for my travel to be her entourage. LOL.

In December will come out a video for a online presence for a household old print magazine that has been around for decades. Maggie is getting pretty close to quiting her job to do the fashion gig full-time. I'm a few years behind her, but I want to do my photography full time.

Yeah, it's a big deal... have fun.

Too bad you're not around, I'll be in town that weekend.

John,

Crazy stuff is happening. Lots of smut I can't mention. I'm sorry I will miss you.

Money has been trickling in. I'm printing someone's work that I like. Also got solicited to be in a focus group on cameras where I'll be paid $300.00 honorarium for talking about gear.

Basically getting paid for my ranting. LOL.

Likely will not be on the cutting room floor for a print magazine's online video of me doing my street/runway shooting. This will be released in December.

You know me: basically annoying people. LOL.

UPDATE: Great news is that John at Focal Point had success repairing my Linhof Select Zeiss 2.8 Planar. The cost was only $250.00 plus shipping.

Originally I bought a 1958 Linhof Tech IV loaded with accessories that was a time capsule. The 100 Planar came with the camera, and the seller was very up front about the lens separation. I figured the body and accessories was worth the $800.00 because the body was so clean, basically a Shelf Queen that is almost 60 years old and the same age as me.

So the 100 Planar is worth $1.8K to $2K for a clean one if you can find one. Mine will be pristine.

I also found a 53-100-180 cam for my Tech V prototype, so now I don't have to cut a cam.

Over the weekend did a big shoot that will be part of a campaign for a luxury retail store in Seattle for one of our friends we made in Seattle. On Saturday and Sunday we had a videographer tailing us with an $85K Red Dragon rig. Talk about a monster camera: about 40 pounds rigged out.

On Sunday I met one of "Maggies" interns. Maggie now has a crew to assist us. All are UG's (undergraduate students), that offer specialties: one is a photographer; one did an internship with Nylon magazine and is a stylist, one is a fashionista and writer, and another a tech geek.

So now there is a crew and it seems like two other retail stores are offering a "relationship" where a retail store in Soho is at Maggie's disposal to have "events" and another store is available on Madison Avenue. Of course anything in the store can be "borrowed" and the stores can be thought of being remote "closets."

Clothes arrived Saturday from SoHo. Some were gifted, and the rest are loaners to be used for a paying gig for promoting a luxury hotel in Mad-Rid (New Mexico pronuncation for Madrid).

Anyways having an intern and an extra set of eyes really made shooting better and less stressful. Already I kinda promoted my reputation for being a lazy slacker, and I was struggling with this image stabilizer made for an I-phone called an Ozmo.

I'm not so great with the complexity of an I-phone so for video it seems like the new intern is better. Kinda nice that I now am no longer a coat rack/woman's handbag holder, videographer, shoe rack and photographer. LOL.

Jill loved the photography we did for her luxury retail store in Seattle that we shot over the weekend in Central Park.

I am also pleased with the results.

We have a similar arrangement with a store in Soho and another on Madison Avenue in the 80's.

Oh-well. We'll see what happens. This work is more "editorial" whatever that means.

"Maggie" tells me this morning that one of my shots is a full page in Vogue Italia.

Two weeks from today is her TED Talk in D.C.

Today I will be getting delivery of my Linhof Select Zeiss 100/2.8 Planar from John at Focal Point. The $250.00 repair of the lens separation was successful. Now pretty much I have a 1958 Linhof Tech IV that is like a time capsule that I bought for "no money."

I might be shooting this rig this weekend. I'm a lucky guy.

Congrats Cal... if you find it online, let us see it.

John,

Pretty much "lifted" off of Instagram. Perhaps only a 20% chance that I got photo credit, even thought "Maggie" gave them my name. Really discouraging how much my photography gets used for free.

Then there was this online magazine that misspelled my three letter last name. Then there was the BBC giving credit to another photographer for my shot, and also giving me credits for other photographers' shots. Then there was NBC World News Tonight: the producer asked permission to use my photography and told me I would get photo credits, yet the photo credit part of the deal did not happen.

Pretty much the attitude is blatant stealing.

I think you would like my latest prints: 2x3 inch images printed as business cards. It seems the big prints I make are a handicap to editing because one can only view and take in one image at a time. Small prints are best for organizing and editing. While the big prints are expressive I am finding the small prints impressive, and in a way they kinda give the bigger picture when dealing with a body of work.

I'm going out now and if I find it I'll buy. By the way years ago, many years ago I took part in a photography workshop with Steve Sebring who had worked in Italy and I remember I was surprised when he said that the italian edition of Vogue was for him one of the best fashion magazine in the world when speaking about photography. Unfortunately didn't pay well enough the photographers...

Robert,

My friend Mike, a real pro fashion photographer, shot for Vogue USA for free. Basically up and coming and unknown photographers get exploited just for the honor of getting published in Vogue. I am told this is done all the time.

There are a lot of hungry photographers out there. BTW Mike is skinny and so am I. LOL. The idea here is to boost your reputation.

Maggie has over 254K followers.

Just bough "Vogue Italia" october issue #806: Maggie is on a full page (pag.72): beautiful photo, she is sitting astride a metallic chair wearing in black agains a vivid red background! Strong! In the article it is written about her and her Accidental Icon blog and Instagram. But no mention about the photographer, sorry!

What your friend Mike says is what Steven Sebring told us: the editors take advantage of the many photographers ready to put their work on the page for free just to say their work is in Vogue. And he told us this about 15 years ago...everything changes, nothing changes...LOL

This happens not only with photographer but with many other creative people, designer, graphic designer, web designer ...

There was a couple of years ago a strong viral campaign against this habit, but apparently was not so successful...

Congrats for the photo, a good photographer and a good model :)

Robert,

You are so kind.

Sadly nothing changes, and I got mugged again of the photo credit. My photography stolen from me once again. At least Vogue didn't steal my camera. LOL.

I agree Cal... it's why I went the book route.
