I have loaded the F2 with XP2, and I am ready for some fun. The FM adapter is in the mail i hope that the HN1 lens hood does not vignette. It is designed for very wide angle lenses.

edited: This lens hod is not suitable here.

Raid, the HN-1 is designed for the Nikkor 24mm retrofocus lens so it will vignette A LOT with the Nikkor-O 21mm, because 1/this is a 21mm not a 24mm 2/this is a Biogon formula, so its nodal point is way deeper in the elements than what it is with a retrofocus lens.

This is not for no reason that Nikon never designed any lens hood for this very lens : the front element is recessed enough in the front barrel, which is by itself the actual lens hood you just need.

If you use the HN-1, no bricks wall photos but underground tubes instead 😛 😀

🙂

I did some searches last night on the lens hoods by Nikon, and I agree with you on what you have said above. The original lens hood is very rare and I am not going to even look for one due to the high cost.

I could do what Tom has done, which is to use a couple of fiters without glass, or I will leave out the hood totally, as you have suggested.

Thanks.

An alternative to using a filter without the glass is to use one or two step-up rings. I'm not sure about the filter size of your 21mm lens, but if it is 52mm, you could use for instance a 52-55mm or a 52-55 + a 55-62mm. With wide angle lenses this could just be enough to create an effective hood.

The trick is playing around with various combinations of step-up rings, take a few test shots and see when it vignettes and when not.

Here are recent shots from my Nikon SP2005 with Nikkor-O 2.1cm F4 (for F mount).
I couldn't get many images yet, but it feels like showing lower contrast compare to a legendary Zeiss Biogon 21mm F4.5.

Does anyone have an experiences of using both lenses?

Thanks for sharing great photos Tom! good enough sharpness and contrast. I should shot more for get this quality. Actually I ordered my custom adapter for Nikkor-O 2.1cm F4 after I read your article. Thanks again!

could you let me know!!

I had the SLR version that I used on my M4 with an adapter many years ago. It was my first 21mm. It vignetted quite a bit, but I liked it. I sold it when I bought my SA.
