Hi Kuuan,
Just a Question re: 50 1.4 and 50 1.5 canon ltm's
I believe You have Both
Correct me if I am wrong , the 1.5 is a sonnar design, the 1.4 a planar design
Do you prefer One over the other... ?
is the1.4 really any 'dreamier' than tbe 1.5 wide open
Thanks in advance for your Thoughts
Best Wishes-H
Hi Helen,
yes indeed I have both Canon LTM 1.4/50 and 1.5/50
yes, the f1.5 has Sonnar design while the f1.4 is a Planar / double Gauss design ( there is a ver1 and ver2 and sources are not clear about their optical design and if they differ optically, see:
http://aperturepriority.co.nz/2013/05/28/the-japanese-summilux-canon-50mm-f1-4-ltm/ and
http://forum.mflenses.com/confused-about-a-canon-50mm-f-1-4-ltm-t72018.html ( mine is a certain version II )
The f1.4 is contrastier with the more modern look but nevertheless 'vintage' colors, the f1.5 is more dreamy, of course specially wide open, low contrast. Generally I like Sonnars but have struggeled with my f1.5 and have been using the f1.4 more often. I consider the f1.4 to be the more generally useable lens, but other see that differently. ( see link below ).
The above has been my impression so far, but comparing the test photos that I had done recently, and which had been used to make a neat comparison tool by 'Martin', the difference isn't all that striking, see:
http://www.lenshunters.com/tests/a7-normal-lenses-test/
personally I really like the colors of the f1.4, it also looks a tad sharper. Sharpness loss towards the corners, most likely due to field curverture, is more pronounced with the f1.5, but extreme corners of the f1.4 are weaker. Surprisingly I prefer the oof rendering / bokeh of the f1.4.
there had been a thread here where more experienced members compare these two lenses:

same and other people also compare them here:

Helen you certainly made me plan to take out the f1.5 more often, thank you for that, best greetings, andreas
