Bought R-D1s from RFF classifieds two weeks ago. Today the box arrived! Too bad I have no use for the software and charger cable alone – coz that’s all there was in the box. No camera.
By the looks of the box it has been opened en route and sealed again.
It’s a sad day. I’ve been eyeing this camera for months now and have finally broke down and bought it. I guess it will remain just that, a distant dream :(
At least I’m hoping we’ll work something out with the insurance…

Well, the seller indicated that the price included insured shipping, so I hope so!
It's a nice wake-up call, I've done my share of camera purchases on the internet and only had positive experiences. This is the first bad one and unfortunatelly a damn expensive one.

I'm curious to know if it was inside NL, inside Europe, or international ?

A friend worked as a postman in London and told us not to post anything of any value ever in normal post. He eventually left the job because he was harassed for not covering up thefts. (And I'm sure that every depot, except the one he worked at, is full of saints.... before anyone complains).

Dude, that sucks.

I thought I had it bad having to wait an hour to ship a Canonet overseas. It's interesting to see that no matter where in the world, whatever culture is there... the post sucks.

I'm also curious about whether it was international. On the customs form, having a description and a value, just screams, "steal me".

It was Italian post, mailed from there to Amsterdam. But of course it could have been open by either. Never had any issues with NL post though.

You have my sympathies, this is a bad blow. I use the mail system only here in the US to ship (their tracking is now finally decent!), insist on full replacement insurance, and send the buyer the USPS insurance receipt number after the package ships. There was a horrible spat over on photo.net a few years ago over this issue and I would never want myself (or a buyer) to lose money over a sale. I do hope it was insured, if you can save any electronic offer page or sale receipt page that indicates that the price includes insurance it may come in useful later.

Sorry to hear that, I always use courier no matter how expensive, at least they have step-by-step tracking.

I second this... the added cost is worth the peace of mind...

Sorry for your loss... if it was me (having spent most my money on an RD-1) and losing it like that? I'd be livid and probably be left broken :(

The Italian post is infamous for its track record of lost packages, but this is the first time I hear of a package arriving without goods inside. I have shipped lots of things from here (Italy) in the past couple of years, mainly headphones and amps, and never had one missing or stolen. The only package that disappeared en route was coming from the UK, and had just a bunch of bulk audio cables inside.

That said, I hope the seller really shipped insured, as international insured shipments involve special packages with a seal, etc. Does your package have a slip on it, or just a label with the shipment cost?

sorry to here about that....I am waiting for an m2 and my 50mm summilux to arrive from California.....I told my friend to ship it insured....I am keeping my fingers crossed....

Thank you for your sympathy. It’s indeed a sad experience. For one I was looking forward to try this camera for a long time, and for the other I’m running a huge risk of loosing a lot of money.

The package doesn’t have a special seal or a shipping slip (it’s mostly electronic here, scanning barcodes instead). The sticker says “PostaRaccomandata” eur 8.50. That’s what makes me a bit nervous because the seller said the price included eur 50 shipping/insurance cost… The package did have tracking, but it was very half-a$$ed – only showing that the package has left Italy.

By the way, one thing I found suspicious is that the charger cable left in the box (charger itself has been also pulled out) is rather non-fitting looking – it’s that typical fat cable that is common for larger appliances such as TVs, screens, PCs etc. It looks very unlikely to belong to a small sized charger… Hmmmm…..

Well, I’m just trying this to not completely devastate me. I’ve got a 4 day weekend ahead and I should stay positive and go out and shoot. At least the positive news is that I’ll still be shooting film. Gods of photography delayed my conversion back to digital :)

Too bad it happened with so expensive camera. I have seen some listings stating "no shipping to Italy due to number of lost packages"....
Hope you'll get back money.

That's bad luck. I hope that it was insured, although the fact that the box arrived empty must be cause for a case of theft within the postal system (no box, no case), perhaps it would be worth pressing a claim even if it was not insured. (Call the cops?).

My M mount colour Skopar Classic is presently being "enjoyed" by someone within the Spanish postal system, but at least it was insured and they paid out.

Incidentally, in all cases I have come across, it seems to be the responsibility of the seller to ensure it gets there.......None of this "what post would you like to pay for" for me....I insist on post which has loss compensation at least.

Good luck, you must have a claim.

How did you pay for the camera? If by credit card or paypal, you should immediately inform then about the empty package and start an investigation on their part. I assume you have some kind of documentation that shows the seller confirming that it was shipped insured - even if he did not, the law is then on your side.
I am pretty sure the theft happened in Italy - that country is well known for postal scams and other theft related crimes.

Weight

Weight

You have to somehow figure out how much the package weighed when it was shipped and how much it weighed when delivered to you.

Use this weight discrepancy information when communicating with the shipping companies and paypal.
