Also, report the serial number of the camera here and at Epson!

Mijn medeleven Phantomas,
If you know the serial number of the R-D1, it might be interesting to watch the regular auction sites, like Marktplaats and Ebay.it/nl .
I hope it'll be recovered or that it is covered by insurance for your sake.
My R-D1 came with a hefty customs fee, though the seller helped me out there by splitting the difference, even after I told him that it wasn't necessary.
Don't let it ruin your weekend,

fwiw, the regular flat mains cable is the proper one. Strange for a thief to leave part of the package inside.
8,50 can't be an insured price for shipping. Insured is posta assicurata I think. So if you agreed on insured shipping and paid for that, the seller has a problem.
good luck.

Hmmm... that's strange. As I said, the cable inside is the fat one (with three holes on the device connecting side) not a flat as you mentioned and as I'd expect.
I will ask for the serial number. Not sure if I can get the weight of the package. The seller's informed and he's starting investigating with his post office.
Unfortunately no delivery paperwork available at all, they just scan all the data of the boxes. And since it's within the EU no (customs) paperwork's necessary either.
I hope for the both of us that the package was somehow insured, at least I'm operating under that fact given the earlier communication.

Sorry to hear of your problem. Ultimately, its the seller's problem not yours. He/She should refund your money immediately. Good advice already given regarding credit card or paypal payments - the sooner you act the sooner you'll get this resolved. Good luck.

The package doesn’t have a special seal or a shipping slip (it’s mostly electronic here, scanning barcodes instead). The sticker says “PostaRaccomandata” eur 8.50.
8.50 is suspiciously cheap. It says raccomandata, but 8.50 is not a valid tariff for this service to the US. Nor is it valid for an "assicurata" (insured). And anyway, that amount would cover packages up to 350g only for a "raccomandata" and 250g for an "assicurata", both too little to cover a camera, accessories, and packaging. I think Kevin's suggestion might be the key here, and I would definitely a) go to the police to denounce the theft, stating all the above, b) file a Paypal claim, and c) contact the seller.
One possibility, but it does not change things much, is that he somehow managed to pay for Zone1 (European countries), instead of Zone 2 (Americas). 8.50 then makes sense, and it's 350g for raccomandata and 250g for assicurata. Also keep in mind that raccomandata is fully traced, even if you don't see it once it leaves Italy. It's usually a pretty safe form of shipping, widely used for legal documents.
The Poste Italiane URLs: raccomandata and assicurata.
Edit: the more I think about it the more I'm certain you got scammed. The RD-1 alone weighs 590g. I'm sorry it had to happen, and that the seller was Italian. If you need anything from here just let me know.

Thanks for the link ludoo! I'm in Europe, so the raccomandata shipping appears correct.
If no insurance was used it's a pity, but the agreed price explicitly included insurance, which I paid for, whether or not seller followed up.
Unfortunately for me bank transfer was used, so I have to rely on sellers honesty before I jump to conclusions and complicate things. So far I have had enough feedback to believe the camera does actually exist
and he has been responsive about the shipping and the loss. I'm being fair to allow him to check things on his end and hoping he'll act accordingly and gentlemanly settling it (whether or not the package was insured as agreed).
By the way, only camera and charger were bought, no boxes or anything else.

to Phantomas,
my friend, we both got SCAMMED by the same man, at the same time, with the same camera!
About two weeks, I also bought an RD1s advertised in this forum by Bruno Lario in Como, IT.
Agreed and paid 900 euros incl. insured shipping to Germany - unfortunately - through bank transfer.
Two days ago received the package clearly opened and retaped, no camera inside, only the fat 'printer' cable and a copied CD of Epson Raw and RD1 manual.
Contacted the seller by email, explained the situation, he responded asking for delivery proof and any photos of the box and promised to do anything to help with the money recovery. I sent him today - actually two hours ago - what he asked for and asked for a refund; I doubt that I will see the money or camera!
You wouldn't happen to have any contact tel. number or other contact details? It would be good to exchange any usable info we have although I dont know how it can be used...

Sas0662's testimony seems the most plausible. Postal theft where you open the package, reseal it and allow it to continue makes no sense.

Well, we already came to the conclusion that it's a scam. Sas0662's details match mine one on one.
So as heads up for now - if you come across something offered from Como region, especially by someone re-using "Bruno Lario" name, think twice.
He had three listings for R-D1s, Contax G1 set and a Leica lens.

And don't forget the weight thing: 8.50 covers about half what the box should have weighted.
As you are in the Eu, things mightb e easier. Go to the Police, denounce the seller for fraud stating all the bank account numbers, producing pictures and a photocopy of the package's label.
I'll try to dig up an address or number for the Italian Postal Police which covers Internet and postal frauds. It should be a simple case. What a way to risk jail for 2k... People are really stupid.
Once you have a copy of your deposition to the police, I would bring it to your bank, and also fax it to the receiving bank in Italy. Stir up as much trouble as you can, and there's a slim chance the seller will write to you offering your money back.
Edit: before sending anything to Italy it might be better to include a short summary in Italian. Drop me a PM and I will be glad to do it for you.

Oh my god, guys I am so sorry to hear that happened,
I am still investigating my lost package of Pentax DSLR I sold over ebay to someone in Germany and it never arrived. But I still think that it can be a lie. I told to the buyer that it is not a trackable post so I guess he used his chance very well. I had to refund as it was over paypal and there is no other option...
I am going to investigate the case. Today I contact German customs and I am told that anything over 45Euro must be declared even it is marked as gift.
So I am suspecting the customs might ask for declaration and the buyer might have found the customs prices high and lied to me that it is lost. I am going to contact Deutche post if this is the case...Is there anybody from German here?? It might be really helpful to me...
It is so annoying, it is not the money you care for, it is the feeling to be scammed and fooled...

Thanks ludoo, I appreciate your advice and offer for help.
Some details: the guy sent besides reliable description and ebay reference (which obviously appears to be not him) sent very clear photos of the camera. Even serial number is visible. He also appeared to know what he's talking about in respect to photo equipment, knowledgeable in that aspect.
Silly thing from our side - the transfer was made to his "wife's" account (but then my money was also transfered from my girlfriends account
).
Well, we've been had. And i know I've had to be more careful, but unfortunately my previous exclusively positive online camera purchase experience, especially here on RFF, made me relax a bit. Well, turns out to be an expensive lesson.

I am in Germany and have bought quite a few items from both within the EU and from outside. For whatever its worth, anything over 45 euros must clear German customs if it originates from non-EU countries. The buyer must provide a copy of the invoice or ebay auction proving paid value based on which custom fees are calculated. If no such proof is available, customs determines the value and charges accordingly. Hope this helps....
