Somebody is offering me an excellent deal on a set of 52mm b&w filters. I have three cameras, one with a 48mm filter size, another one with a 52mm, and the third one with a 55mm one.

Will photos taken on a 55mm lens with a 52mm filter show some vignette and if so how much?. Has anybody tried this?

Should I pass on that deal.... or should I just get the proper 55mm filters and then a (48 - 55mm) and a (52mm -55mm) stepup rings so that I could use them on all cameras.

The reason, I asking this is because I already own a (55mm -52mm) stepdown ring.

Your help will be appreciated.

I don't think I ever tried that. I have gone the other way where I used 55mm filters on 52mm threads. My recollection from reading about this years ago is that it will depend on both the focal length of the lens, and the aperture used. In other words, if it is a telephoto lens used at f/16, it will probably be OK. If it is a 24mm lens used at f/2.8, you may have problems. Are you unable to try them out first?

A 52mm filter on a 55mm lens seems to me q surefire way of getting vignetting. If nayhting at all, a step-up ring to 55mm would be more useful. I would not use a stepdown ring or smaller filters.
