R-D1 refurbs back on Epson site

Congrats Aaron!

I am leaning towards the CV 35 1.7 Ultron but am curious as to why you guys chose the 40 1.4 Nokton -- or do you have both? ;-)

Also did you get the single or multi coated version of the Nokton?
 
Oh, actually FedEx tracking says it DEPARTED Independence KY on the 25th at 8:14 AM but it hasn't scanned IN anywhere else yet. :-(

I know, I know, it'll get here! I feel like a kid at Christmas! :-D

So about those lenses . . . looking at Cameraquest I see the 35 1.2 is pretty big physically while the 35 1.7 is much smaller and the 40 1.4 smaller still.

I also like the "50mm" FOV and my favorite lens on my Nikon D200 is the 28mm 1.4 so perhaps the 28 1.9 might also be good for me. I love low light shooting and wider is almost always better for me.

This should be a fun week around here as these Thanksgiving Day R-D1s start showing up!

Thanks for the info on the 50mm DR. I'm having it sent up from Florida by my brother so I'll get a chance to give it a shot -- assuming it hasn't gone all hazy!

Hi Joe-

I had the 35 1.2 but returned it. Its an awsome lens but I just wasn't ready to carry it around. I bought the 35 1.7 and couldn't be happier. I am really impressed with The Ultron..

Congrats Joe ........... I have the 35 Pancake Skopar which is amazingly sharp & cheap too - it depends on where you want to spend the cash - I prefered to land it in the 28mm lens, have a cheap 35 and a fast 50 (used) but 35X1.5 is a nice focal length, good for street work where the Ultron 35 would be amazing .. the 35 PC is my only compact RF lens ;-)

In my experience, the 35mm framelines are a pretty good guide for longer distances -- at infinity, they seem to match the 40's angle of view almost exactly.

They're fine until your focusing distances get down to about 8 feet or closer. By that point, the 40's effective focal length (which increases as you focus closer; all conventional lenses do this) has "zoomed in" to the point that the framelines show you more than will appear in the final picture.

This can lead to unpleasant surprises ("I was sure I had Aunt Martha right at the edge of the frame, so how come she's cropped out?") unless you allow for it when composing close-up shots.

I also read that the 28mm frameline in the R-D1 is difficult for glasses wearers (like me) and so I think the 35 1.7 Ultron sounds like a good place to start.

The 50 DR 'Cron is on it's way from Florida. It'll be interesting to see what kind of shape it is in.

The R-D1 has left Jersey but dunno where it is exactly. The charge still hasn't hit my card which I find odd, since they had a hold on it last week.
 
For months prior to the release of the M8, the refurbs on Epson website has been tempting me... Oh boy was it tempting me. It was listed for months. Then "Stephen G" posted "Where to find RD-1/RD-1s" and I was the first to respond with a link to th Epson Clearance website. Within hours... gone. I was thinkin... Oh Well... Didn't need "yet" another camera... I had convinced myself that no more refurbs were going to be available.

Then after weeks of "Refrubs available" and "Refurbs gone" posts, I just happen to check the website one early morning on my way out to run some errands (I'm an early bird... 6am ish). Didn't take long for me to run for my wallet... This is just a few weeks after upgrading my lowly scanner to the wonderful Epson V700 (I'm still primarily a film guy) Time to ebay more stuff. HEHE lol.

I'm Hopeless...

I wonder if Epson r-d1/s sales have gone up with all the not so good talk about the M8? it seems the refurbs are going like hotcakes...

Definitely feel the r-d1 will make a good companion to my Leica cameras and lenses. Will post pics whenever I can... gotta another arrival on the next few days... the one that requires diapers..

It got my attention.

I was very excited about the *idea* of a digital M and had I not already broke the bank on new Nikon gear, might well have gone that route. I had never heard of the R-D1 until Jono Slack got one.

So Jono starts posting his usual great images taken with an R-D1 and another poster at DPReview pointed out the re-furb deal. They seemed to be available for weeks back then but of course as soon as it became clear that I really wanted one, they were gone.

I bookmarked the Epson page and saw on Thanksgiving morning that they were back in stock.

Wanting more info, I did a Google search and found THIS thread and the $155 off code. I ordered mine and then posted on DPR about availability and within 5 minutes they were all gone again.

Mine was just delivered by Fed Ex!😀

Now I just need a lens!
