“Ricoh's approach...does leave you with very, very noisy images at anything over ISO 100, (noise is visible in flat tones even at ISO 64).”

Xcuse me, MrSimon Joinson , but what noise?

Props for the DS lite ... might invest in one of those someday for my aging father so he can do the brain games

I am liking the color of the GRD alot and the noise is not nearly as prevalent as DP would suggest

I read the review earlier today. Frankly, considering the results I've seen people produce with this camera, I may just disregard the reviews and start trading in gear.

I just bought this camera and I can tell you its a pleasure to operate. I am a little suspect of that review. If you read Ricoh's website there is a couple of articles on the effort , love, care and work they put into developing this camera. Nothing against Canon, but this seems like a camera developed for certain discerning photographers like the ones on this web site..For me the lens is excellent enough but what makes this camera stand out is it's operation, size and feel. I love the BW mode...

I have almost zero interest in a digital camera of any sort but this one looks interesting. Coupla questions:

1) People keep talking about the BW mode, what is the advantage of this over converting to BW in Photoshop and having the option to do color if you wanted to? I have played around with the channel mixer to do BW in photoshop and have never been quite happy but I'm pretty much a black and white film person so digital conversion just lacks something to me that I can't quite pin point.

2) It seems pretty expensive for what it is, is there any place to get one for less than $700?

I had a GR1 for a week or two and didn't really get into it mostly because just having an on/off switch puts me off and it was a little noisy I thought (mostly the wineing film advance sound) but I'd be willing to compromise for a small digital which does black and whites that have a more "filmic" look.

The noise of images taken in B&W mode is different than the color ones. I'm willing to say that the images taken in color mode has more noise. Yes, if you take the same image, one in color and one in B&W, conver the color to B&W, you'll see much more noise than the original B&W one.

I bought my GRD from Tony Rose a few months ago for $690. Is it cheaper now? Dunno...

1. Noise; please read "grain".
2. Sharpness.
3. Acutance.

It is very film-like.

Hello, I just got my camera. I was a little surprised to see so much barrel distortion. Is this normal for people?

i think that's 'normal' for a 28.

the head is stretched out so much partly because this lens has so little barrel.

Not that this is exactly a scientific comparison, but this was taken with a GR1.

Aah, that's what is going on! Thanks, ghost. Now, I remember reading about the difference. I'm pleased that it is not something aberrant but that I'm just not used to working with the focal length . . . I've used the 28 mm on my zoom lens a lot but am not used to it responding in this way. I guess Capra's advice about how if you pictures aren't good you should be "getting closer" does not always apply, at least in the literal sense 🙂.

The GR1 is perhaps my favorite compact camera of all. Given Ricoh's history with the GR series (even though I'm not in the market for a high-end digital anything, I'm gratified they haven't given up on making interesting cameras that aren't "me-too"), I can't imagine their skimping on optical details with this new model.
