Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that the use of 35mm was made obligatory for German stills news photographers in the 1930s, but unfortunately I have mislaid the book (bound copies of a 1939 photo magazine) in which I think I could verify this. Have you a source for your assertion that "He forced Leitz/Leica and Zeiss/Jewish connection to assist the Japanese"? I'm not saying you're wrong: I'm just saying that I'd not heard it before.

Oh: and what was the "etc." in "the grain, etc."?

What may puzzle people the most here is to discover that a casual link to an otherwise very skippable Vanity Fair article arises such a flame war discussion about Polanski-the-child-rapist.

The OP did not intend this thread to be a platform for people to air their judgmental attitudes. It is beyond me to understand why hijacking a thread is such a great sport for these individuals.

I think a quick social psychology course would do wonders for a lot of people on this forum, to learn about biases and social pressure - I have just taken one very well made on Coursera - highly recommend it:

I never forget the terrifying incident when my kids were playing in our friend´s pool in Florida, naked, as is the custom in scandinavia. Police came and wanted to arrest four and eight year old kids... The "social code" is surely different in USA and Scandinavia... I think Polanski just has a different set of social codes. The incident might not even reached news in France...

Possibly, although I think mostly it's just too boring to carry on this thread. I think we can all agree that child abuse is bad, that doing bad things not necessarily make someone a bad artist and, last but not least, that the fact that someone used a Leica as a prop in a photoshoot does not really warrant starting a thread on RFF. (Although I suspect there will be some disagreement on the last point 🙂 )

Stating the obvious: people are multifaceted. A person's character is defined by their choices.

Great art or great acts of philanthropy can be made by a person who has or is going to in the future commit an immoral act.

In a way a person's artistic achievement becomes like their offspring, and to an extent separate from their creator.

If conclusive evidence came forward that Beethoven was a serial killer, it would not diminish the genius of his musical output.

Yes, it is hard for the knowledgeable observer to separate their knowledge of the artist from the creation, yet I believe it is important to separate the two.

It is interesting Hitler's paintings are largely ridiculed when mentioned in any context as if they could have been any worse because they were Hitler's paintings while sketches by John Lennon or which ever "good guy" however dull get praise. Can we separate the art from the artist?

I've seen Knife In The Water. It's as you say a brilliant film. Who can forget Chinatown, arguably his best film, and one of the most sophisticated films to come out of America in the early 1970's.

At 13 it probably would have, and it would certainly have hit the scandal sheets. The more so as it appears to have been an actual rape, not consensual sex. But one of the things about "underage" is that it varies from culture to culture. It was only quite recently that I found out that the age of consent in several European countries is 14. The most realistic seem to me to be Britain (16) and France (15) but of course I was far keener on its being 16 or 15 when I was in my teens myself...

There was also a kerfuffle in Spain a while back -- it was reported in the Telegraph -- when a 13-year-old was murdered by her 39-year-old lover. Would it have been OK if she'd been 23 and murdered by her 29 year old lover?

On the subject of scandal sheets, of course they make things up if there's nothing else that passes for "news" in the eyes of their addled readers. I live 30-40 metres from a bar-tabac and today I saw that one of the scandal-sheet posters (for iciParis -- I just went and checked) was suggesting that Prince William is not the father of the latest (or at least, I assume it's the latest) royal baby.
