About a year ago, I bumped my newly CLA'd Canon P against a restaurant table. The only damage I could find was a 'crack' in the front viewfinder glass. Within weeks, the finder was annoyingly cloudy. After ignoring the camera for months, I took off the top plate Thursday night. The finder didn't have any 'cracks', it had a major separation. With a little fiddling, I managed to pop the cover glass away from the cemented prisms. I could actually smell the Canada balsam. Not being the patient type, and with little to lose, I decided not to order the UV-curing lens cement so popular with those that rebuild their own lenses (?!!). I called a couple of science hobby shops in Toronto and found some very expensive but suitable sounding scientific slide mounting cement, Cytoseal 280 (nobody uses Canada balsam to mount slides these days). And it works. I put three healthy sized drops on the prism assembly and slowly lowered the cover glass into place. The finder is now clear as glass and the four tiny bubbles trapped in the cement are quickly migrating to the edges. In two more days, the cement will be completely set and I can reassemble the camera. A few hours of careful work and $50.00 worth of fancy glue and my P will once again be usable.

I couldn't wait two days. I reassembled the camera this morning. The repair exceeds any expectations. The finder is far better than when I first bought the camera two years ago. It's actually slightly brighter than my M4-2! Because this cement is acryllic, it's claimed to last for 'decades'. The only problem is there's no known solvent, so it's effectively permanent. I can't go back and do it over again if I wanted to.

good to hear victor.

being a biased old fart i'm happy that another canon p will be around and someday be passed onto another for future enjoyment.
