One of my friends back in the late 90s bought a house that had a full darkroom already w/ sink, multiple fans and a light trap style door... Previous owner was using it for storage room some other Prior owner built it.

Ok, so let's assume this a spoiled brat. Her filthy rich father bought this expensive camera for her. She only uses it to post pictures of her friends on facebook. She doesn't mind shooting in the rain, and she doesn't like talking to strangers (especially much older than her). She does not deserve to have this camera, while there are many talented young poor kids who deserve this camera better but can't afford it.

What is this, communism? I personally wouldn't care even if she put the RX1 on the floor and crushed it with her wet luxury shoes. It's her money (or her rich parents, or maybe rich boyfriend?), her camera, her business. I'm sorry but the thread is pathetically ridiculous.

at least in my place,
you could see a lot of kids playing with the latest gadgets..
teenager showing off with their newest germany cars at school..

and for camera...
kids since elementary to junior high or high are bringing their full frame dslr to school and mals

and for the more mature conscious of status
The Leica / the red dot is one of the men accesories to get accepted in high end socialita ...

they all are hanging an M .. with at least summilux or noctilux
to shot .. their meal and dinner
and most of their photos are made using iphone

kids wearing AP ROO watches and driving latest bimmers ? using D5 to shot on facebook ?
ussual sight

I wouldnt care less about it

haha yes! This is what I've been thinking about. The problem is space, without sufficient space things are tedius...but we'll see. I currently use my Univ Darkroom but they are permanently closing soon and so I am thinking about building makeshift darkroom (I have roomates) or finding a community darkroom...well, we'll see.

Anyways...

In defense of the original poster, this is his rant...

We are all envious at times, I think.

Edward, I appreciate your opinion. But I don't think there is the need to be pathetical too to make your point.
Don't feel personally offended, it's just a request to stay objectively and let ideology aside.
As the headline says, it was just a little rant, and I'm sure Keith is already reconciled with the circumstances of his life and with his own gear...
To be completely honest, I'm uncomfortable with the unlimited consumerism of some kids of today too, but if I remember when I was a teen, I want ALL too, and I want ALL immediately. Typically this fades with the time and the experience, that things don't make happier... oups, is it allowed to say this in a gear-centered forum? ;)
 
Haempe, as a major in law and political science, believe me I know exactly what is communism. My remark was kind of tongue in cheek, and sorry if it offended you.
 
fascinating article at petapixel. I thought though that the Commies over there took care of all the "rich folks,' you know, sophisticated income redistribution: everybody is equal, some are just more equal than others :D :D :D Sorry, crew, couldn't resist :) ;)

Rewind 20 years ago when I was 19 I made over $50K a year at my job. My best friend bought a new Jeep Wrangler when he was 17, and paid with cash. We both had good jobs and saved money and didn't blow through it on crap like some kids do.

I met my girlfriend at the time at a bookstore she was wearing sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt and drove an old chevy caprice, beat up and rusted. She was 18 I was 20 and she actually made well more than me. She just spent her money on things that mattered.

So if an RX1 was something this girl wanted then she bought it for herself.

I appreciate your post. It was just a little rant. I don't have to reconcile with the circumstances of my life. I am quite successful in what I do. The situation I ranted about was one of those where you would have had to be present to understand. I have expensive equipment, but was never one to walk around with a camera around my neck. Aside from living in NYC through the 70s till now, I have always been cautious and wearing a camera around my neck was never comfortable. I don't flaunt what I have as this girl was. Pride or not. It is not my thing. All that matters is what comes out of the camera, whatever it may be, one's vision. She had too much "vision" of herself, and not in a good way.
