Interesting to read the comments, some nasty, that this post elicited. I was not making any comment on young people with expensive equipment.
...Lucky girl to have wealthy parents I thought.
When I was 18, I received my first "real" camera as a combined holiday, birthday present. A Minolta SRT101. Even in today's money, the price of that camera would nowhere approach the price of the RX1.

That's a good envy.
Because you can't buy a darkroom, the only way to cure that is to build your own 🙂
I was headed home via the subway to pick up my son from his last day of pre-k. As I sat down I noticed a very, very young girl out of the corner of eye, with what I thought was a Leica around her neck. Once seated, I glanced up and saw the red ring around the lens where it meshes with the body and finally, RX1 emblazoned on the front. She could not have been older than 17 or 18. She saw I was looking at the camera and she unfolded her arms to make sure I had a good view of it. Lucky girl to have wealthy parents I thought.

haha yes! This is what I've been thinking about. The problem is space, without sufficient space things are tedius...but we'll see. I currently use my Univ Darkroom but they are permanently closing soon and so I am thinking about building makeshift darkroom (I have roomates) or finding a community darkroom...well, we'll see. That's a good envy.

Edward, I appreciate your opinion. But I don't think there is the need to be pathetical too to make your point.Ok, so let's assume this a spoiled brat. Her filthy rich father bought this expensive camera for her. She only uses it to post pictures of her friends on facebook. She doesn't mind shooting in the rain, and she doesn't like talking to strangers (especially much older than her). She does not deserve to have this camera, while there are many talented young poor kids who deserve this camera better but can't afford it.
What is this, communism? I personally wouldn't care even if she put the RX1 on the floor and crushed it with her wet luxury shoes. It's her money (or her rich parents, or maybe rich boyfriend?), her camera, her business. I'm sorry but the thread is pathetically ridiculous.
The issue? She saw I was looking at the camera and she unfolded her arms to give me a better view, with a look on her face that said, " Ha ha. Look what I've got." I tried talking to her, extremely politely I might add, one photographer to another, but she ignored me. I never had a reaction by a "photographer" like that before.
We comfort each other because we cannot afford a RX1.
It's better to see folks with expensive cameras than, say, expensive cars. The former create much less pollution and are much harder to drive drunk with.
Ah, now I see the issue... you got dissed by the girl! 😉

Don't feel personally offended, it's just a request to stay objectively and let ideology aside.
As the headline says, it was just a little rant, and I'm sure Keith is already reconciled with the circumstances of his life and with his own gear...
To be completely honest, I'm uncomfortable with the unlimited consumerism of some kids of today too, but if I remember when I was a teen, I want ALL too, and I want ALL immediately. Typically this fades with the time and the experience, that things don't make happier... oups, is it allowed to say this in a gear-centered forum? 😉
I have the same reaction when I see high school kids on their way to school in fairly new BMWs. [I'm going to stop here so as not to start up on one of my rants about wealth distribution around this wacky country of ours.]
