Scanned b&w film to Silver Efex?

Is there any advantage or disadvantage in going from LR to Silver Efex, or better to use only LR for scanned 120 negs?

Silver Efex is really for converting color images to black and white. I don't see what purpose there would be to using it on scanned BW film images.

I use Silver Efex in Photoshop. I find it works very well with scanned B&W negs converted to RVB before processing. A lot of adjustments are possible.

Conversion to B&W is obviously its primary purpose, but even scanned B&W could use some tweaks. You can use Silver Efex options as automated 'actions' to apply those tweaks.

You can obviously do the same things without Silver Efex, but the price is right so you have nothing to lose.

Since EFex is now free, give it a try to find out for yourself if the workflow works better for you compared to LR. EFX has some powerful tools that some people believe simplify and speed up the process of getting the final look they desire.

I use it sometimes, since the plugin, other than converting color to B&W has a number of other effects such as toning, detail extraction, vignetting, etc.

Some of the presets turn out better than wha you might pick out of say AnalogEfex.

Can't hurt to try a few things and see what you come up with. I've used the Fine Art high key preset with some modifications on some scanned B&W with desirable results especially if I blend it on top of the original scanned layer.
