I use the Epson drivers. (The ones shipping with tiger are the GIMP drivers.)
You might want to take a look at this:

Keep in mind this will apparently reinstall the driver completely though, while it really shouldn't be much of a problem to have two drivers installed for the same printer.
Infact I'm still doing exactly this in tiger with my 1270.
The Gimp drivers deliver much greater tonality for B/W and better tones and accuracy printing color, at the expense of being much slower.
The Epson drivers are a lot faster, but obviously have problems with, well - just about everything else, I'll post a list if anyone's interested
🙂
So I'm using the GIMP for high quality and the epson for text etc. Both drivers are activated, I simply choose one of them from the dropdown in the actual printing dialog...
Epson produces exceptionally good printers, but their OsX support and drivers are a mess.
And after having had to deal with their exceptional hotline multiple times over the last years I got the impression that while osX certainly supports Epson printers, Epson doesn't necessarily support osX.
😀
Hope I'm being of any help,
Good luck!
Phil
BTW. If you install the 200+ printer drivers, you could just manually delete the ones you don't need from /library/printers/ afterwards to save up some space..
