Scanning with a digital camera

That portrait is inspiring. Really worth clicking on it to see it bigger.

Camera scanning rocks! And Vince's pics aren't too shabby either!
;)

Just beautiful Vince!
Glad to have you onboard this thread!

Many thanks -- that was a total luck shot, though I think it could be better. I think I did that back in about 1998 as well (1998 seems to have been a productive year for me!) for a regional magazine out here. It was a new car test that was also incorporating a travel piece, which was on the covered bridges of Lancaster County, PA. I was just inside the bridge taking some photos through one of those cutouts on the right, when these Amish kids came walking through. As soon as they saw me, the little ones took off running. I think I may have gotten about 3 or 4 shots, this was the best one. This is the only slide of that series I've held onto.

M2 and Tri-X, 1993. One of my very few wedding photos.

Also from 1993, M2 and Tri-X. Not as crazy about this scan -- seems that some detail is lost (I notice it in the hands).

You know this is very odd -- I haven't really gone through these France pictures in-depth like this since 1993. Hmm, maybe I have an exhibition here that's been sitting around all this time!

Do it! The carousel picture tells such a story.

I think if I did do a show, I might have to see about getting better scans than what the Z7 can deliver. I made an 11”x16” test print of the carrousel photo today (just before I ran out of both paper and light black ink) and it looked too grainy for my liking. Not sure if there’s a fix for that, other than seeing about getting a higher quality scan (and no, I’m not going back into the darkroom thanks). I’m confident that I’d have more than enough material from this 1993 France stuff for a show, but I’d want to make sure that it’s going to look good when printed.

The image seems over-sharpened. Would a less sharpened version have more pleasing grain?

I don't know, actually. I don't think I went sharpening-crazy on it, but of course anything is possible. What I am going to do tomorrow is have one of our local photo labs do a high-grade scan of it so that I compare. I've been wanting to get a high-quality scan of this image anyways, so it's a good opportunity to do a side-by-side comparison. I can always try again with the Z7 -- interestingly, I did a scan with my Plustek 8200i and it looked almost the same.

I also have a silver print of this image (though it's only 6"x9") and it has some grain to be sure (it's Tri-X), but it's nowhere near as pronounced as it is in the Z7 scan.

A closeup comparison of the lab scan, the Z7 scan and your darkroom version would be greatly appreciated.

From a 4"x5" black and white neg, circa 1996. Originally printed as a platinum-palladium, so I toned it slightly in that direction.

I'm going back to this place next week, so I'm hoping to get some more photos. Been almost 20 years!

Does anyone know if it's possible to stop NLP from writing 'Digitized with Negative Lab Pro v2.1.2' in the caption field of images? It's more than a little annoying when you're ploughing through hundreds of scans! Thanks.

You probably know you can select all and sync (after changing master), still an extra step. Contact NLP developer and ask him to change in next update?
