Don Goldberg will fiix haze cheaply. hes been great to me in the past.
this sonnar copy has a great rep.

the auction has nearly 5 days to go.
i am sure it will go for around the 250 dollar mark.

...Even with what looks like a huge scratch in the front element... Looks too rough for me.

even with the scratch and haze it could still approach 250 USD.
that's what the years of hyping this lens on this forum has done.

notice that the common 50mm f1.8 is also up in price after the praise it got here.

Can the haze be fixed? I had the impression that the notorious haze/fog problem on the rear element is not possible to clean.

Cheers,

Cheers,

it depends where the haze is.
if it is on the element in front and back of the iris, it will be a cinch.
a less than perfect f1.5 fifty still delivers good photos with pleasant OOF areas.

I have been postponing a buy.
A mintish Canon 50/1.5 would be nice.

Raid,

Prices are creeping up. Hard to see anything in the US$200 region anymore unless it's not listed on the big auction site or incorrected listed.

A good user is hard to come by and a minty one is even more coverted.

Get one first and upgrade if a better one comes along. I don't think the lens will lose any value along the way.

Cheers,

Benny,

Your words are true. I will see what can be done here. I would need to sell the Canon 1.4 though. Any buyer?

i have a lot more than US$250 in mine after a CLA. not minty, but still quite nice after a proper bath. maybe i was a bit anxious to have one and overpaid, but my thought is that it's unrealistic to expect relatively risk-free copies at that price.

It's a glorious lens. I can't help thinking that, w/ a little fixin' up, this sample would make someone very, very happy...

... and maybe I am daydreaming. A lens that still can result in good images should be good enough for me rght now.

I would not shy away from this lens because of the haze issue.
the scratch can be made to have a less of an impact with a black paint daub.
one of my Nikkor f2 lenses had haze on the two surfaces that surround the iris , which I cleaned up myself with ease for a 100% clear optic.
this is no 407 dollar collector lens , but just right for a user lens.

I've wanted one of these lenses (along with many others). I had an early bid on it, but I think we end up bidding against each other and driving the prices up.

There's always the last 5 minutes which will run the price up. There was a Canon 35/1.5 a few days ago that skyrocket in the last minute.

That's Benny's style. I think he must have about 5 or 6 in his collection now but he's still not happy & is eyeing mine:D Canon 50f1.5 is indeed among my favorite 50mm. Recently I acquired a Topcor50mmf1.5 & its signature is very close to the Canon & physically it looks so much like the Canon, that I often grab the wrong lens.

tooffy,

Your copy is really perfect both on the outside and the inside. Most of the time, the rear element of this lens is hazy and not easy to clean. Not to mention wipe marks and fine cleaning scratches. Therefore, you copy is a treasure indeed.

The Topcor is also a beautiful lens too! However, I dare not thread in that direction. You know how prone I am to GAS.

Cheers,

Agreed, and I find many times a so so looking lens can result in very decent results. But where the tire meets the road, in those instances when you really need or want the sharpness, the lens ought to be able to deliver. I have quite a few that do, aand unfortunately, some that just do not.

I am still very happy with a Canon 35/2.0 I picked up cheaply from jiri_e and the sharpness is amazing; but after a shoot in the Hirshhorn the other day, with the lens wide open, I found that I got some unwelcome vignetting. I hope it's the UV filter that's still screwed on that I never removed. Otherwise I don't know what I'll do. (Sorry, it was a bit off topic, but addresses the issue that even a good lens, if a bad specimen, can result in an overall bad lens.)

And Raid, I now awake each morning excitedly going to RFF to see what today's avatar will look like!

Hi Jim,
I am stuck with an unused Canon 35/2, and it takes guts to use it! In your case, it is most likely the filter that is causing the vignetting or maybe a lens hood, if you used one.
I don't know why I suddenly want a Canon 50/1.5, considering that there were plenty of opportunities in the past when such a lens was offered at RFF for a low asking price. I may not need this lens anyways. I have the Canon 50/1.4, which is a very sharp lens with "superb" optics. I always convinced myself that I already have the original Sonnar 5cm 1.5, so that's why there really is no need for a Canon 50/1.5. It is the "best Sonnar copy", but is it better than the Zeiss 5cm 1.5?

My avetar today is .... a Zeiss 5cm 2.0 LTM :D
