What hood are you using? I don't get vignetting even w/a screw-in vented hood originally intended for the 50/1.8.

I am still very happy with a Canon 35/2.0 I picked up cheaply from jiri_e and the sharpness is amazing; but after a shoot in the Hirshhorn the other day, with the lens wide open, I found that I got some unwelcome vignetting. I hope it's the UV filter that's still screwed on that I never removed. Otherwise I don't know what I'll do.[/I]

I always convinced myself that I already have the original Sonnar 5cm 1.5, so that's why there really is no need for a Canon 50/1.5. It is the "best Sonnar copy", but is it better than the Zeiss 5cm 1.5?

Raid - "Better"? Probably - definitely better construction, likely better glass and coatings giving better overall correction. Your Canon 50/1.4 is certainly sharper wide-open (double-Gauss design) but it's bigger, and its not a Sonnar 😉.

So the other day I picked up a Leica M4 for dirt cheap and had to buy a lens for it, Im pretty broke so I bought the cheapest, fastest lens I could find on that given day(except for those russian ones). So I settled on a canon 50/1.8 mint condition with filters for a decent price, when the lens came to my surprise not only was it absolutly mint with filters caps and case but was really a canon 50/1.5 not the 1.8! Alot of people seem to like the 1.5 so I guess I got really lucky.

Yes you are very lucky! A good condition version of the lens is really not easy to find. I would suggest that you keep it, but I'm sure after you see your pictures from it, you'll come to the same conclusion yourself.

I don't know why I suddenly want a Canon 50/1.5, considering that there were plenty of opportunities in the past when such a lens was offered at RFF for a low asking price. I may not need this lens anyways. I have the Canon 50/1.4, which is a very sharp lens with "superb" optics. Raid, I tell you what- if I can get Brian Sweeney to do a conversion lens for me like the one I see you have, I will NOT be looking for the Canon. Hell, even a fixed Jupiter 3 may cure me. For a while. But the look of Brian's shots taken with his converted Zeiss blows all others out of the water. For me, that is. THAT is the "look" I want. But where to get the old Zeiss lens???? It will be a while, I fear.

Brian keeps on looking for Zeiss glass. You can get from him a lens directly.

I got lucky with a very clean [read crystal clear] Sonnar 5cm 1.5 LTM, and it has become my favorite 50mm lens. Yes, its construction is not as nice as other lenses, but I care mainly for the optics.

bennyng, I have developed my first few rolls from the M4 canon 50/f1.5 combo and I am more than pleased with the results, it also being the first time I shot without a meter and pushing film it was a great learning experience i got mostly good negs maybe 90% or so

where did you buy it from?

Brian spotted an auction on ebay for me. The seller seems to be reputable for having clean Zeiss Sonnar lenses in Contax mount. The cost is about $175-$200. Then Brian removed the glass from the barrel, and he placed it inside the barrel of a J-3 [add another $125-$150 for a J-3]. Brian's work is not measured by money.

This way, I got a crystal clean Sonnar 5cm 1.5 LTM.😀

My current avetar shows a Zeiss 5cm 2.0 LTM.

In my wide arsenal of fast LTM stuff, it really is my favorite of all, even more so than my"Tokyo" Nikkor SC and my Leitz Summarit and Xenon

It`s a lens EVERYONE that works with a LTM or M mount Leica SHOULD have or at least shoot with once in their life.

The "Japanese Sonnar".......

It`s the Sonnar that Zeiss should have built back in the 1950`s!

The quality of the build construction and the coatings put the wartime/postwar era CZJ/Russian Sonnar to shame, it`s what makes it still in my opinion the BEST Sonnar clone/copy made before 1960.

I find it a BETTER Sonnar looker than the Nikkor SC f1.4/50 "Japan" version and the "Tokyo" version of the SC lens is pretty pretty rare so it`s not even worth mentioning - (though I find that version of the Nikkor as nice as the Canon ~ and just as "creamy" bokehwise)

Ohh and what people forget is the Canon is rarer. much rarer than the Nikkor SC by thousands and thousands of numbers in production, but yet you can still find them at a decent price (under $400 MINT) - way cheaper than the Nikkor now is. 😉

Ohh and here`s a photo just to remind you what the f1.5 can do LOL!!!! 😀

No Sir!

It`s was done with Kodak CN400 finished in a unretouched "overlay" due to originally a dark scan.

Sadly 🙁 I haven`t used any XP2 for many years, (I used to use it often in the early 1990`s back in Germnay) the XP2 has a differnet tone and feel than the Kodak film does, but I do "trick" out the CN400 to make the photos look vintagey or artistic and somewhat similar.
I take my C-41 b&w work more to a true grey tone or slightly purpleish, as the CN400 done normally comes out more sepia looking.

I haven`t shot with my Canon f1.5 for a month or two, so next roll of Kodak Gold 100 that`s already loaded in my 45' IIIC K/IIIFBD will be shared with a 1957 Nikkor HC f2.0 as well, so I can get a feel for what that new lens will do, which some of you might remember I found it sitting on that really kool "numbers matching" Tower 35, late last year.....so shooting with that lens is long overdue! 🙂
