Shintaro

Has anyone dealt with Shintaro lately? I have emailed him through the address on his website, but have had no replies. Is he still accepting work? I wonder if any of our members (especially in Japan) know.

Ray,

Perhaps "dreamsandart" in Kyoto can help.

I have a Leica M3 redone by Shintaro in a rough hewn black crinkle finish...fabulous. What project are you planning?

bobkonos,

would it be possible for you to post a photo of the M3, would love to see what the finish looks like 🙂

cheers

A short while back a LUGGER had a terrible experience w/ him (Shintaro). The latter painted his Leica the wrong color and refused to make it right. As I recall a few others chimed in w/ other horror stories. Not exactly the best PR.

Maybe he's just cantakerous--like so many gunsmiths I've encountered in my life. Maybe the constant paint fumes or solvents are to blame?

I am not sure I can recommend him - his work has excellent feedback, but I sent him my M3 in February, got one e-mail confirming its arrival, paid my 600$ and since then nothing at all... No response to friendly e-mails, not even to a postcard (I don't bombard him, I just try every few months), nothing. It is November now and frankly, it will be a pleasant surprise if I ever see the camera and (the result of) my money again....Not a nice experience.

I doubt if even a Harvard-trained lawyer could help you in Japan .......or in Korea where I am. I understand it's changing somewhat, but The Japanese don't have much use for lawyers and certainly not a foreign one. I think you're SOL if you have a "legal" problem anywhere in Asia.

That was about what I thought. Maybe, please one of our Japanese members could give him a telephone call on my behalf??

From what I know Shintaro makes the camera painitings just as a side job. But this doesn't excuse his communication style. What happened to Jaap is strongly disliked.

I can recommend the following proceeding for having a camera paint:

- get a repair/disassemble manual, or an explosion illustration of your camera
- disassemble it carefully
- send the parts that should be painted to a local galvanizer and let it dechrome and denickel (this will not cost more than $20)
- paint the parts with the color you want (from microtools or other)
- send everything, unassembled and carefully packed in small zip bags, to the repairman of your choice.

You'll not pay significantly more than for a CLA - which makes anyway sense after a disassembling.

Tom,

I will have to borrow a digital camera to post a photo but I will try as I also want to post pics of my Leica M and Nikon rangefinder cameras for other topic requests. So please help: once I have the digital image do I send it to Jorge to post? If not, what steps do I take? As you can see, I am not of the digital world. Cheers, Bob

Hi Bob,

Once you get a digital image, you can upload it by hitting the "MANAGE ATTACHMENTS" button below the typing window. It will then take you through the process of uploading the jpeg/jpg file into your reply or post.

PM me when you are ready to do it and I can help you through the process. It is easy once you get the hang of it 🙂

regards,

Tom
