Show me your 9x12 folder

Chippy - when you have a chance to scan, I would love to see some examples from the 9x12's. As I mentioned above, I hope to have some very soon. I got to thinking about my comment above. I am not sure I ever used the 9x12 format. I certainly used my father's with the 127 roll film a lot many years ago. But I don't recall using the 9x12. I had experimented cutting down the film and loading the cut film holders, but I don't think I ever got around to using them. I'm really looking forward to using them. I want to try both ground glass and the other two finders. Those would have been the more common use I think.

I have an Agfa Avus and an Agfa Vag, two Ihagee's and two Etuis - all 9X12.

The Agfa Avus has been converted to a wide angle with a 90 Angulon. The lens folds up in the camera and works very well for travel. I use a VC 28mm view finder and scale focus. Film is T-max 400 rated at 800. The worst problem is that the film holders are heavy!

The Vag (which is smaller and lighter than the Avusl) is being converted to use interchangeable lenses with the 90 Angulon and a 150 Fuji 6.3 and I will also convert the Avus later to use interchangeable lenses. So you guys might not like me for the modifications but I purchased these cameras to use.

The Patent Etui's are very interesting but I haven't found film holders that work with them. The Ihagee's are better constructed. One had a Kalart rangefinder installed on it when purchased.

Also, I have several Kodak 9X12 holders that work without inserts. Unfortunately every one of the leaks light around the "clip" that holds the film in place. Haven't solved that problem yet.

I think this is a 9x12 folder. It uses roll film. So a 9cm wide roll film was available in these days?

The camera is a Ziess Ikon Nixe model 551/17. Quite well made......

Hope you will show us some of those 9x12's you have. They sound fascinating. It seems it was a popular camera at one time. I think it was the ease of carrying, along with the large film. You could make a contact sheet and have a good sized photo. No need to enlarge.

You know I think I do recall hearing about a 3 1/2 inch roll film. I don't think it was that popular, nor did it last long. I am not sure mind you, but I think I either saw it mentioned in a magazine article or on ebay.

Hopefully someone who is familiar with it or has a good library can confirm that, and give more info on it. Thanks for showing that. It certainly looks like the 9x12 style.

The biggest Kodak folders, the No 7, were 7 inches by 5 inches (around 12.7 x17.8 cm, I think) and used roll film.

Presumably being handy with wallpaper helped when you loaded them...

can you show a picture of it with the back open to take a look inside? how does it look from a view facing down on the bed?..does it have a different scale for the 9x12 or not. i cant think of the make atm but i remember seeing one that had an adapter and also a different scale to use depending on the format

I think you are right that you can also use 9x12 sheets. Think you can get a ground glass for the camera. The pictures shows the back of the camera and if the camera was for roll film only there was no need to design it as it is. The take up spool is 9cm wide.

LOL. Wallpaper eh? I knew there were some rather large roll films, but I had never heard of one that large in roll film. It must have been interesting to develop.

acording to my little book here it definately takes 9x12 sheet film..arnt these things just great!

It is a funny camera. I have not yet found out to take out the take up spool. I can't release the winding mechanism. Normally you can just pull it out.

The shutter is running.....so the camera would be ready for shooting. 120 film will probably be difficult to fit. It has to be the right spools etc. It would be a 6x12 camera then?

It could probably be done.....the camera has no presure plate but I have made nice images using a 6x9 folder without a presure plate. The next problem is that my CoolScan9000 can do 6x9 scans as maximum. I could scan from both ends and then stich together. I also have an old Micro Press 4x5 which takes graf lock backs. A 6x12 Horseman back for it......could also do it 🙂 .....then I could "pull" out the Tessar from the Nixe and put it on a plate and use it on the Mirco Press.....to see how this Tessar performs. Tessar's can be very different in quality. When it is good......it is very good....

Just thought it would be interesting to show a couple of things I have. I got these with some items purported to be Welta items. Not. I got to looking at them after having had them a long time, and realized I apparently had something MXP was talking about.

The one on the right is obviosly the back for a 9x12 setup to use roll film. You can see it has a knob that is connected to a spring loaded cover for a red window. Can only be for roll film. It is shaped for and obviously fits 9x12 cameras. Interesting. I remember when I got these I noted that and them dismissed it. Who ever heard of that? 🙄

The other one I am quite curious about. It is of a size and shope that it is a 9x12 film pack holder. Yet look at the small hole. The hole doesn't have the dark slide. That is on the other side, what is obviously the front.

Anybody know what that is? There is actually one on sale with other items on ebay right now as well.

Well, that might be. But wouldn't one worry about light-tightness? Isn't that window is awfully close to where the film pull tabs, and therefore, lighttraps would be? Still, what else could it have been I suppose?

that mostly exposed film pack you have would be worth trying to develop(more particularly if it happened to come from your fathers stock). colour is difficult but if it black and white you have a chance to get some images from it that were made way back then...depending on what type of B/W its possible to use very subdued red safe light at a distance away from the film too..a little reasearch on the correct 'soup' to suit the film for developing as well would be needed

Well,this one wasn't from my father, but if I thought there was exposed film there I would try to develop it. Cheesh, I haven't developed a film pack since an Army investigator school I attended in 1967. I have developed some little bit of sheet film, 6x7 and 4x5, but it was the stiffer cut film.

But have I so totally forgoten? I thought when you pulled the numbered tab it came all the way out, leaving only the numbers that weren't exposed. That should mean the one I have is totally unexposed as all the numbers are there. That may not have been clear in the photo.

EDIT: BTW, I am now ready to try the Balda my father had. It cost me four sheets of film to get the measurements right. :bang:

I used to have the spots marked on my paper cutter, but for some reason no more. I first thought there was a stop on the cutter, but there isn't. Well, there is, but it isn't for the one inch mark. Hope to get at least one photo tomorrow morning. If I am lucky, two or three (that's all the holders I have).

I was just looking at the threads on the main forum page and noted the threat on resolving the darkslide problem. I need one.

Early this morning, I took my old Balda 9x12 out for a couple of photos. Took one of a Merry G0 Round on the Mall and as soon as I reached for the cut film holder to change to another one, I looked at the darkslide and called myself several kinds of fool. Back I went and took the photo a second time.

I walked to the car, changed cut film backs, spotted another photo of the Washington Monument, composed it, took the photo, then removed the dark slide and took the photo again. :bang:

My only defense is that I was in a hurry as I was on my way to work and also didn't want to be explaining to any bored/sleepy Park Police that I wasn't a Pro: "See, no tripod."

I need to work on my work flow with this camera for sure.

And some of you guys think you are good because you are accomplished at taking photos of your lens cover! Hah! Can you develop dark slides? Do they do better in tray or special spiral holders? 😀 😀 😀

plenty of ways to skin a cat as they say(not that i eat cat) and if you have a horseman back or dont mind the exspence to purchase one, fine. i was just suggesting a way to make the camera in question operational for minimum cost and hopefully get a panoramic picture as well. if it needs a pressure plate it would not be difficult to make one up...the camera did use roll film before tho so you may or may not get away without it

Yes.....I think it was just some fantasy. It would be a shame to dismantle the nice Nixe......and I only have a 6x9 Horseman back but a 6x12 is on my whish list. They just seems to be more expensive than the 6x7 and 6x9 backs (2n hand). It could be fun to make a 6x12 out of the Nixe.......

I found one more 9x12 folder. He was a bit shy so he needed his brother and sister to be with him........

The other two are 6x9 folders. The one on the left I have tried once just to test how the lens performed. The heliar lens is quite good.....or I must say very good. I have a Plaubel 6x9 back for it. I just have to remember next time that I have to use the numbes 1,3,5 etc....and not 1,2,3. It was bad mistake!

I saw an attachment on ebay once where it was possible to use a 6x9 roll film back on a 9x12 folder?
