Hi Zhang,

I now have a replacement Iskra from 'Grizzly Bear' and it's a gem ... everything about it is better than the other camera which has gone back to Ukraine. I haven't put a roll of film through it yet but will be doing so soon.

They really are a very nice folding MF rangefinder with some excellent features ... they can keep their capitalist equipment ... I like the Iskra! :D

Hi Keith,

Congratualtions! I am pleased that you finally got one of these Russian gems in godd shape.I heard that the camera could produce images that are almost as good as that of a capitalist Leica M? Is it true?

Cheers,

Zhang

I am a bit sarcastic because Leica and to a lesser degree Zeiss are particularly worshipped in China. I like Zeiss better for it seems to be more "practical".

Here's another set of little gems:

Early Zorki-5... I like the square rangefinder window, the lines of the red engraving and the slightly curved sides. Oh, and she makes an impressively crunchy ratcheting sound when winding. :)

I'd label this the three graces if this wasn't such a clichéd comparison... but either way it's the same Zorki-5, flanked by the Pass the RF FED-2.2 and the smoothest Zorki-6 I have ever seen, all in our beautiful courtyard here at work (well, where we work when we don't wait for ripe apricots to fall into our mouths that is ;))

Here they're still relaxed at home in the former Soviet Union, as of yet unsuspecting of the secret mission that would soon launch on a plane to the Capitalist West! ;)

Great job Misok ! You have to have good hands to cut to size, and glue to size.

There is a liquid shoe polish called "Kiwi" with which you may add a brilliant black tone to the leather. If you go for it, use a brush and not the sponge with which it comes with.

Cheers,
Ruben

Thanks Ruben.

It was my first attempt.. it's a nice challenge when you know you have cca 0.5mm tollerance..

And to be truth about leather treatment/colouring - i'm a bit afraid of adding smell to it.. becauce often you 'wear' camera on your face, you know... we'll see.

all the best,

m.

Yeah, I keep forgetting to post a "Well done" on the Zorki.4, misok. I really like the looks of the skin, and the self-timer brass button is a nice touch, too.

thank you. in fact that button wasn't plated when i bought the camera, i don't know why.. so when i removed the self-timer mechanism (had non-positive influence on shutter and i didn't use it anyway), i threw away just the lever and left that nice brass button.

cheers,

m.

Last post may have been better if I'd included the photo that I meant to!

I thought it might be time to add mine to the mix. this is my Kiev 4A. I love this camera, and I think I finally fixed the last problem with it (frame spacing). The first roll turned out well, we'll see if it's the same if I'm not shooting repeatedly like I did with the test roll. This is also the camera that brought me to this forum a few years ago.

Love the Zorki 5. Mine had a rather ropey wind-action when I got it, and a slight issue that 1/250 wouldn't fire properly. Sorted now and the winder now is lovely and smooth with a "zzzzp" sound. Had some excellent shots from it, several with the J-12 :)

Bought a Zorki 11 last week, the winding mechanism was too stiff to wind the camera, my first attemp to wind the shutter broke the fitting of the wind lever :(. I disassembled the winding mechanism and re oiled the stiff gears. Everything works fine now, the winding lever is yet being glued with 2 component steel glue.
