Damn, these Barnack Leicas are just soooo pretty! I haven't got one otherwise I'd post a pic. BUT I do have a Nikon D700 sitting gathering dust since I gave up digital a year ago and went back to film. If I sold that I'd be able to put together a nice screw mount outfit. For someone like me who doesn't know an awful lot about these cameras, what would you recommend for a first body and standard lens? I mainly use a Rolleiflex SL66E so ultimate sharpness isn't too important. It would be nice to get a lens with a bit of character, say, nice bokeh and a little bit of vignetting wide open, and which is capable of producing nice, sharp 8x12 prints. Does one such exist?

hi Nash,
good buy. Happy for ya, I could not believe you sold that other one so I hope you and the new love are going to be happy forever after.
Checked my 11 o'clock nickel Elmar 3.5/50mm which is in feet as well, but it does not have the Germany marking. Then again, it's an 11 o'clock lens, so maybe everything was different anyway from the one to the next model... Mine is unnumbered and sans infinity lock as well... and it has the comma integrated into the '3' which I think is kinda cool, it does not seem to be a mis-engraving.
Here's a Ricoh GRD macro shot of it:
Nickel Elmar 3,5/50mm unnumbered, 11 o'clock, no infinity lock, feet-scaled. With original brass 19mm filter fitted.

That's an interesting lens Johan. The front lens is definitely different from all the Elmar's I have seen. It looks bigger than the ones of other Elmars and sits more up front. I wonder if it could be a prototype or perhaps a hacked one. How are the photos made with it?

It is the old filter that makes it look odd.
Looking to the back of the picture you can see how an 11 o'clock Elmar's flange is a smaller diameter than the one on the camera.

Hi Huub,
personally I think it's a regular early Elmar but what makes it look different is the macro setting in my new-to-me Ricoh GRD (which I truly like a lot, btw).
Here is another view from the lens, this time with body included:
The interesting bit in fact is the no-infinity lock tab on the other side of it, I've been trough lots of past auctions on Westlicht but have not yet seen a similar lens. I'll shoot a picture from it tomorrow and put it up here.
The filter I simply dug up in a box of old filters that I picked up somewhere some time ago, I cannot even recall where. There must have been at least 50 different filters in there and most were crap but I also had some Canon 40mm UV filters still NIB and other nice stuff.
The 19mm brass filter with ribbed rim simply was at the bottom of it, unprotected but unscratched too. I suppose it must have been there forever, waiting to be valued for what it really is...

Finally at home...
That's a lovely pair! How do you think they compare to one another?
Derk
Sorry, Derk. Have missed your question.
To be honest, the results are hard to tell apart (if at all).
If the same lens is used, they produce the same pictures.
The Zorki works a little ... well ... let's say raucously.
The shutter runs with a distinct "clonk" instead of the smooth "clck" of the Leica. Everything is not as subtle with the Zorki as with the Leica.
But the results are similar.

HuubL, I'm new to Barnacks, so excuse my ignorance, but what model is the bottom camera? Is it a II with added slow speeds?

Beautiful indeed. I like the transport lever and the door in the back on this Barnack-type camera. It makes the camera in a way even more sohisticated than the IIIg.

With the lever advance and the back door why would I want an M?
