Sigma DP2

I had a quick play with one in a camera shop in Japan - impressions: focus speed much quicker than DP1 (still not super fast though, but OK for non-sportsshooter me anyway, this was in low light btw), focus distance wheel much firmer i.e. much less likely to be moved accidentally, shot to shot better (again no speed demon but fine for regular snapshot use), interface (changing aperture etc.) much better, etc.

The DP1 was basically a great sensor in a 2001 camera, if the DP2 has a sensor at least as good it'll be a winner with its much better body. I'm seriously tempted - anyone want to buy a E-420??
 
Vanidel, hope you are wrong. I in any case made the down payment. They also have DP1 in stock for EUR 424. In the past in Holland we would pay the USD price in EURO's, but I have seen more and more situations where the prices are the same both sides of the Atlantic.

I think they might have listed a VAT less price. Be it in France or Germany, it is advertised between 649 and 699 euros (which is the US price in euros). I doubt Holland could offer prices 20% lower being in the Euro zone, does not make much sense IMO. nevertheles, I hope you get that good deal 😉
 
Just got what I believe is the first DP2 in France. I took a side by side shot with the M8 and 35 Lux Asph, both at f8. I am so amazed ... but I am out of battery ... I will post more later

At the risk of opening old wounds, Kevin, weren't you the guy who was all up in my grill about daring to like the DP1 about a year ago? Care to describe your conversion experience?

Congrats with your DP2 Yanick. Cam e-mailed me and mentioned that you got the DP2 from Marcel in Paris. Good luck and I look forward to your results. It is a very tempting camera and the 509 Euro price in Holland at fotokonijnenberg (including tax by the way) is 90 Euro below the advice price here. In the meantime I am still getting familiar with her DP1.

I took it at 2.8 to see how OOF areas render.

Shooting in manual focus mode is great and I had no issue of responsiveness for the two hours I used it

it looks like it was made with a classic MF folder.

the next dp-3 will have an f 1.5 lens.

He received 3 today that were already sold. He is expecting three more next week and said Sigma was shipping very few at once (imitating Sony's tactics with the PS3 ? 🙂 )
Do take the additional hood, it is a must to protect the lens and it will help holding the camera steady.
The external viewfinder is a must for any RFF member too ...

Yes, I am the guy. Good memory!

As I implied in another post, at this time last year I was quite upset that the camera was selling for hundreds of euro less overseas. After currency conversion I think the price difference was around $300 USD. This was before all of the negative issues surfaced. Subsequently I was glad I didn't buy at the 700 euro plus price point in Germany.

My conversion experience came when I was able to purchase a NIB DP1 for 250 euro a couple of weeks ago. An online seller was dumping them.

That's all there is to it. Focusing does not work on my camera at all in low light but I have gotten used to manual focus. In fact, I only use the camera at daytime or at night with a pocket wizard flash radio trigger.

Sometimes I think the pictures are too sharp. I am not used to that kind of sharpness. And in darkness I cannot see anything on the monitor, so composition is hit and miss.

All in all it is a splendid little camera tho. I think the DP2 will more successful, however, because of its 24.2mm lens and faster operation.

Well, that's a good price, and much closer to worth it, I think. And I agree about the insane sharpness. A very good lens combined with that sensor...it's really quite unique. I eventually sold mine to get an R-D1 and have no regrets, but I'd love to check out a DP2 one of these days.

For now, I'm waiting for the new Pentax DSLR. If I buy a camera this year, that'll be it...
 
New Pentax DSLR? What's that story? I haven't heard anything about it!

Personally I think the Samsung evil looks interesting. I want to finally use my Canon FD lenses on a digital body that has a better sensor than the one in my e410.

It's called the K-7...supposed to be designed with the Limited lenses in mind. if it's got 1/8000, 100% viewfinder, good ISO 3200, I am probably in...

The Samsung evil DOES look interesting!
 
My friend here just got a dp2 which is amazing as they are not selling here yet, his came from japan, but the most amazing thing is how much he paid, 8100 RMB which is about 1200 dollars! I told him he was stupid. I didn't get much time to use the camera but initially I thought it was a lot bigger in a bad way compared to my GRD and the speed was about the same and I dare say the GRD felt a little more responsive especially in snap mode.

Not a bad little camera though, a nice step up from the dp1 which I really didn't like. The lens is very usable. Still waiting on the compact Olympus though.
