soft release users

Man, I've never even heard of these things, and a web search is not doing me much good. I have a general idea that it is something that screws into a shutter release, but how does it work?

sorry for my ignorance...sooo much to learn

oh yeah, they are nice to use. i have a few. use them- silver, black, red, purple... good way to code film too. they are very helpful in practice. i was shooting without one recently and i thought to myself, this feels clunky, until i realised the s.r. wasn't on the camera. once you try them you'll want to use them on cameras with deeper releases.

joe,
The soft release you sent me arrived in the mail Friday last(8 April) and I have been trying it out on my various cameras.
It doesn't work on the FED5 as it over hangs the wind lever.
It works very well on the FED2, my Zorki 3m(where it sits now), the Canonet GIII, Vivitar 35EE, Agat 18(and looks way cool on that one) and the Seagull 4a-107 TLR.
It makes an astonishing difference on my Arax-60!
On my Kiev 4a it's knid of un-needed--the shutter on that camera is very smooth already.
Thanks a bunch, joe! I may have to get some more but right now I will happily move it from camera to camera.

I have three types of them here. The MINI one is good for every camera I've ever used (Bessa R2, R3A etc.). Two others are bigger, the shorter one is too short for Leica M, it could use but will touch at the rim of shutter release button base that will not be good for the black body camera since the color will be scratched off. The last one is the taller that I use with M6, it's perfectly fit and the diameter size is the same as the shutter release button base and can protect the rim of that from scratch, it's nice !

Soft Release

I use them on my Feds ,Zorkis , Kiev and Fm2. Get the older style chrome cupped ones and mix up a little epoxy glue . Put it in the cup and it will make a nice dome when its dry. Why pay big money?

what's the difference between a soft release and a small screw?

The price... 😀

Actually, to get serious again, you would have a hard time finding a small screw with that unique tapered thread size that shutter releases have.

Wow, I am surprised so many people use them and love them! I had a mini on my MP for a few days, but I never really got into it. It just did not feel necessary for me. The MP is pretty smooth in the first place, but I find that my M7 is even smoother...so it does not seem to be much point there either. I think it probably gets down to how you release the shutter. The preferred method with the soft release is to put it in the first joint of your index finger and squeeze (as opposed to pushing with the tip of your finger), but that is how I release the shutter anyway, so the extra height felt more awkward to me than anything else. Also I think because I sort of pull back towards me a little bit when I squeeze my finger and the extra height on the shutter button was actually making me put some friction on the side of the release, making it less smooth than without the release. Does that make any sense? I cannot think of a better way to describe it at this time of night...

Abrahamsson said, on his webpage, that the dished ones are inferior as they force you to use the ball of the finger rather than the first knuckle, and that's one of the reason why he designed the SR with a domed top. However the MSR has a flat top, so I am wondering if the top design, flat or domed, makes much of a difference.

I have a dished one, so I would like to give your epoxy suggestion a try, and see if it works.

By the way, for many years I have been making "shutter release extensions": many cameras have the release button inside a "cup", and then you get to the release point, the flesh of the finger tip has already made contact with the edge of this cup. The extension pieces I made were out of the extremes of those worn-out Gauthier cable releases (they're all over the place) epoxied together.
